I'd have to say Morgan's, but perhaps, just one nice one.

I totally agree.
Right now several Morgans seems more desirable BUT in the long run you'll probably be happier with one nice, high grade coin.
And for that amount of money skip the gold coins.

I would go with a single nice Morgan. You can't really get even much of a gold dollar, certified and in a decent grade (fakes are rampant in the gold dollar series), for that kind of money. But you could get a nice Carson City Morgan dollar, say an 1882-CC or 1883-CC, in MS63 for that sum.

Best Regards,

George

'd say go with what you like.

But really if you think about it, how much of a certified gold dollar can you get for $200? But you can get a couple of really nice Morgans, or a single better date in nice condition for the same money. (Or if you want quantity, a bunch of common lightly circulated ones.) If you would be happy with a single coin I'd go for the nice better Morgan over the common low end gold dollar.

Depends what you're doing with it and how you like to collect. MS pieces are best for sure.

Gold is much better as medallions than bulky silver, as a random example, but you don't want to ruin good MS pieces on them because you'll want them to be cleaned from time to time.

I would say a very nice MS-65 Morgan dollar. Nothing beats the beauty of that.

I personally would go for the gold. There are so many Morgans, plus the gold is gonna be older!

I'd get the rarest, highest grade single morgan you can afford.

Count me in the "one Morgan" crowd. $250 will buy one stupid 1881-S.

You get what you want but I can gave you some price.
Common Morgans MS65+,* or CAC under $200
Carson City MS63 or MS64 around $200
Type-1 or 3 in AU under 250 problem free
and yes all coins are certified. Last gold dollar I bought was a Type-1 ANACS net grade XF-40 for under $130.

Scottk: That's one of the most common gold coins available. In under MS that coin brings melt, the premium you paid is not worth it IMO. I know because I extensively researches European gold coinage at one point. But that coin is a good base point and will be worth atleast melt so it wasn't too bad of a decision.

Good luck
