doesn't look ancient to me, but does strike me as old. Perhaps an early modern architectural piece? I imagine it would be a depiction of one of the gods - it doesn't look like any ruler I've seen on coinage.

maybe a lid to something? like an ornate container of some type? must be fairly modern.

I think you are right chrsmat. Possibly a lid to a glass or ceramic container cointaining scented oil or some other ungent. I don't think the container would be that big. Whether for a man or a woman, I couldn't say. I would guess, for a man. I don't think that the portrait on the lid looks feminine enough for cosmetics.

It's not a coin or a lid, for a change I know what something is. Would be a shame to ruin the debate though. The clue to what it is, is in the making, it has a folded rim and that is pretty rare to find on metals after the 18th century.

Post it in the detecting finds bit, I am sure they will nail it. It is a bit unusual as these don't usually have a bust on the 'top', they are normally a simple slightly rounded object.

I think if this piece is as rare as you think, you need to take it to a museum to have it checked and verified. I would like to know where this was found? Was it at an ancient site as an authorized dig? If this is old and that's a big if in my book. I don't think it's any older than the 19th century.

I will venture a guess......
I notice that hand held glass mirrors made their first appearance in the first century CE ...... In of all places Lebanon !
Could it be that we have a very elegant example here ? It does seem to be the right size for the purpose.

Looking at the picture the piece is less than two fingers wide at best I'm guessing 50mm. That would be pretty small for a mirror, but it's a possibility.
