Yeah, Ken, I know what you're talking about. It's been very helpful for me, getting back into the hobby, to share coins I've got questions about and get opinions from a broad variety of people.

I agree that digital photography has been a boom for coin collecting. Myself, I have well over 25 cameras and 5 are digital. I have a dark room from the old film days. Hundreds of lenses, flash units, studio lights, numerous tripods and so far have only taken one or two photos of coins. I have the coins so just can't see a reason to take a photo of them. People, animals, trees, cities, etc all change but my coins don't change. So no photos required.
What I like is the ability to look in a book or a web site for a photo explaining a coin. I just don't know what I'd do with photos of my coins.
Well it's nice day yet so I'll go out and take a photo of one of my cars.

I've spent over an hour tonight working with balancing the lights with adjusting the ISO, shutter and aperture while shooting different types of coins (today was mostly proofs / PL pieces). I love the process and the added dimension that photography brings to coin collecting for me.

At the end of the night, I ended-up saving this shot of a 1960 Canadian PL dollar:

Me too! In fact I've started to think about buying coins for their potential photographic portraits, rather than for other reasons such as value or investments. It's a wonderful match.

LOL, As A photographer, I enjoy the coin collecting end much, much, much, more than the photo end. It is way to much like work for me.

Now with that said, yea digital photography has totally changed coin collecting. There is so much information (photos) available now. A great learning tool,

Error collectors are loving it because some same barely noticeable errors now can be seen very clearly with good photography.

Buying coins from bad photos, then taking a great photo of a coin and flipping it, is profitable.

You make a good point, Errorcoins. I would suppose that ebay could not exist in its current format without digital photography. And taking advantage of different capabilities of photographers can certainly be profitable.

Roman that is one heck of a nice shot. Appears like it was well worth the time. I do appreciate photos of coins and agree with the necessity of using digital photos if using the internet for sales. Myself, I just can't imagine what I'd do with photos of my coins. I have virtually thousands of digital photos of family, friends, neighbors, vacations, houses, etc.,etc.,etc. Those are great since things like that change. Sorry, I just can't imagine what I'd do with photos of my coins.

I believe that digital photography of coins has changed my life, nothing less! I was a computer programmer, and I started taking pictures of my coins for my computer screen background at work. Then I thought that since I have the pictures, and some doubles, I might as well sell them. I started on ebay, then on our own web site. Now, the web business is growing every day. Taking the coin pictures is one of the most enjoyable part of the business for me. As I often said, I might be getting old, but there are many engraving details that I see first on my computer screen, then I look again at the coin to enjoy it even more.

I use the digital photography as a means to share my collection ,, for so long I was in solitude with my coins ,, My wife tries to act interested , but I know in reality its not really the case .

at least through the medium of pictures I can share some of my coins with like minded folks .

not to mention the Identification aspect if I were to lose my coins to theft.

that is when I can get what I'm after in a picture ,, I'm having real problems with very high luster MS coins , but eventually I will figure out the what and why .

Carl...I don't really do anything with my coin pictures except share them here on occasion and also, because my eyesight isn't the best, I use the pics to better see my coins. Still, each to their own. You obviously have things pretty well set up the way you like 'em, and who could wish for more.

So true it is. I'm pretty old and my eyes are also not the best. One is due for a caterac, not sure if spelled right, operation soon. Had stage four cancer not long ago so not much interested in collecting photos of coins. Actually not much interested in collecting anything anymore. Except coins that is.
Who could wish for more? With me it would be a bladder, prostate, lymph nodes, etc.

I had cataract surgery four years ago...was by far the youngest patient in the prep room! It's an easy procedure, was done about 7:15 a.m. and by 4:00 p.m. that same day I had 20/25 eyesight in that eye (where it had been 20/400 without correction). Eventually cleared up to a nice 20/20! Best wishes...on the cancer and the eyesight!
