His photographs are pretty bad. He sent me these because the ones he has on the auction were way too small. I think its his lighting but I also think it was cleaned at some point in the past. Not too fond of the green dot of death either. When the grade goes past AG-3 it starts getting kind of pricey, at least for me.

Hmm...fill a hole or wait...as I did my set of V nickels I filled holes and replaced with better coins as they came along, and I saved some of the ones I replaced and traded some in, so I would say if it is cheap enough to fill the hole. I wouldn't recommend that with every series, but I like V nickels enough to want to own them outside of the set. Just me, of course.

I have to fill the holes. It's a sickness. My 1885 and 1888 were both smooth dates soaked in vinegar overnight.

You can see them clearly if you go outside and hold it in the sunlight at a 42 degree angle with low humidity and a light breeze.

But hey, the hole is filled...

Good Grief! When did 1888 become expensive? I used to consider it to be a one or two dollar coin in that condition!

I too have to fill those slots in every album. What I've done over the years is get anything to fill the slot. Then start attempting to improve each coin and take the old ones out and start a second set. Example is I now have 10 Lincoln Cent sets.
Once a long time ago I saw a 67 Imperial Convertible for a great price. Not sure what to do I asked friends. It's a massive car and tuff to fit into any garage. 19'-3" length. One lady said if you don't buy it you'll wonder why the rest of your life. If you do and don't like it, you can always resell it. I drive it on nice days now.

In years past I would buy such coins to fill holes...but found out that I didn't "like" them, so they caused more annoyance than satisfaction. Also, any money that I wasted on them was not available to buy something nice. Unless a coin is truly rare, such worn examples seldom bring much in trade or will pay for the auction costs should you sell on ebay.

So, I only buy what I can afford and know that I'll be happy with.

If you go after this coin, good luck, and I hope you enjoy it!

Best wishes

I would wait. My 7070 has only VF or better and I will only go VF with the Seated dollars and Bust Quarter and the harder large cents.

Sorry... my point is... pick a minimum grade for your set and don't deviate from it.

I would focus on something else on my list intently as a distraction. If you still can't stop thinking of the coin you want to fill, then buy it and scratch that itch. If the item you choose as a distraction makes you forget about the first coin, then it wasn't meant to be and you can come back to it later.

Hold tight to your budget either way - if you pay a fair price you probably won't regret it.

bobby, you're right, I do want that one but unfortunately the price is a wee bit steep for me. I better stick with the $8 one for now.

:)

That is a might purty v-nickel though, ok, I must go wipe the drool off my chin and shirt. lol.
