I use one of 5 main sources for most every coin, depending on what I'm looking for. Consignment antique malls for "bargains" but more often then not a seller thinks they have a $50 Shield nickel when it's closer to $3 value. Sometimes I find nice things though like a $20 Half Dime that should be priced $40 minimum. You have to know what you're looking for. I have another local dealer.I visit for high end certified coins that are priced competitively vs. ebay market prices. I have a "middle" type guy that's in a strip mall & has buckets of any U.S. coin you could imagine minted between 1900-1964 that sells them all at the same price based off of what bucket they're in. I use ebay for modern mint sets & commemoratives. And I CRH. Edited by CopperCastle

so then where coin coin dealers buy bulk coins I mean there has to be a source I can't comment on what larger dealers do, but my LCS (small, Mom and Pop, brick and mortar joint) says they mostly get coins from people bringing them in, not really any particular commercial "source". |

Rupp...not sure where you are trying to go with this, you received a lot of answers and you should be able to read between the lines. Your question is like asking "where do car dealers get their cars?" Dealers buy from many sources and they spend large amounts of money...tens of thousands of dollars or more all the time to stay in business. A coin collector will not and generally can not get the same prices. Coin dealers are in business to make money and you are not going to get coins anywhere near what they pay. Period.....Keep studying magazines, internet, go to coin shows, etc. You will understand more once you get your feet wet.

If you buy in the same volume as coin dealers, you can probably get their prices. But a collector's volume is usually going to be much less. Of course, brick and mortar dealers also have a storefront, and an influx of people into their store who want to sell coins. If you've ever tried to sell to a dealer, you know they typically give you a fairly low offer. That is so they can make money.

I seldom and I mean seldom ever buy coins via the internet. Way to many coin shows around. At many coin shows you get much better deals especially with many dealers present. Competition lowers prices. And it you can find coin shows, think of this. You see the real coins, not a possible faked photo. There is no postage, handling, restocking fees. No insurances, no lost in mail either. And if your a good conversationalist, get to know dealers and they will look for certain coins for you.

I agree that Coin Shows are the best way to get a coin at the lowest price. You aren't going to steal a coin since in theory you're dealing with a knowledgeable dealer but they may need cash and/or want to move some old inventory. As an example, while they aren't massive scores, yesterday I was at a show in Auburn Ma and got a decent "G" 1870 Indian cent and 1888 Liberty nickel for $40 and $15 respectively. The guy I bought the 1888 from threw in a 1867 2 cent piece for $5. I filled three holes at very reasonable prices and knocked off a couple of semi keys from my want list. Good luck hunting! |

Also in favor of the coin show route. For what it is worth....If your due diligence is done there are PLENTY of dealers that you will know more than. And "steals" can be had!

Just don't go to ones that are run by a company as they will charge you retail!

 Garage sales in my experience are filled with low grade stuff that the owner has looked up in the RedBook and putout with an MS65 price. Coin shows are great you often see things that a local dealer may never have. The internet is good tool as every Joe Shmoe has the world at his fingertips and has access to coins one would never hope to see otherwise. A local dealer can be a godsend. A good dealer cultivates his customer while his customer is cultivating him. I would not have the knowledge or collection I do if I had not found a good dealer. Online auctions are fine and coin shows can be amazing, but a local person who knows what you are looking for and the price point you can bear is agod thing to have. I mean you cant always be like that muppet on tv "This is how I dress to get a loan"  |
