Isle Of Man Coins

I realised I made the mistake of repeating the same pic twice just now after having a good sleep,
altered it so you can see the young Vic. head on the obv for the penny.

I was just wondering because I though if I go to the Isle of Man am I not allowed to stand in as many places? ..

So they are a good, upright people who never sit down, okay nice to know..

The Triskeles on the Isle of Man coins is really not a new thing. It has been on Isle of Man coins since the Lord Stanley coinage of 1709, and on most coinages since that time, even when IOM came under direct British rule in 1765.

But the Triskeles is actually a much older symbol, being a symbol of the island of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. And it began being used on coinage deep in antiquity, notably on coinage of Syracuse:



This is an AR 8 Litrai from the reign of King Agathokleos of Syracuse Sicily, minted ca. 317 BC - 289 BC, notice the small Triskeles under the Pegasus on the reverse.

Why do you say it's the earliest democracy? I think Iceland had the earliest parliament, the Althingi. Tynwald is just the longest running as I think the Icelandic one was broken up at some point during the struggles for power.
