gold is soft and gets rubs and dings more easily than its silver and copper cousins...
That being said IMHO this is a low mint state coin MS-60 with some remaining mint luster
Should be valued in excess of $1500( even with the price of gold below $1200 an ounce)

Lots of tiny nicks on the obverse, and fewer on the reverse, but I don't see much wear at all.
AU58 seems about right to me.
I don't think it needs to be slabbed, but it DOES need protection. Perhaps you may consider an acryllic screw capsule of the appropriate diameter. That way, the coin can be easily handled, without further damage.

This is an interesting coin. The obverse strike is hammered and has uncirculated details with some friction evident in the fields. The reverse is a tad blurry but seems very nice as well.
In Mint State this date gets very pricey, very quickly. A $10,000 coin in MS63! While it's not likely to grade that high there is a chance. In AU grades it's valued as a common date pretty much. I say grade it and hope for a MS62.
Your grandfather had a nice selection of coins.

It looks MS to me. Maybe 63. Unc. gold tends to show every little ding and scratch. It is a candidate for a good TPG IMO. |

Well, with all the grades varying from AU58 to MS63, I decided to work on my photography "area" a little bit. I noticed that some of the nicks and lines were actually on the holder, not the coin. So I took the coin out of the holder (don't worry, I was wearing gloves), and took two more pictures of it. The color you see in the picture is the color on the coin, I had to shine a light on the coin to be able to capture the full color of it.   |

It certainly has a shot at an MS grade, I'd send it in.

I think I'll send it in to NGC, when I submit it should I use the "walkthrough" or "express" option? I honestly don't really care about the turnaround time, it is just the maximum value of the coin that I'm wondering about. I assume you are an ANA or NGC member? You need to be to submit. I'd use either the Express at $60 or the Early Bird at $30. There will be handling and postage fees that will increase your cost another $50 or so. I'd value the coin at $2500 for insurance/grading purposes. Good Luck! |

Yes, I am a member of NGC. I guess I'll use Early Bird since it is cheaper and I don't mind waiting an extra day to get it back. Thanks for the help BH1964.

I agree with AU58, I think the first pictures were nicer than the second ones, due to the better contrast present.
