Interesting coin. I know nothing about this type. How plentiful are they? They must show up in metal detecting finds.

In the 20th edition there is just one page on those.
But going by the website linked above I would say that it is likely to be an issue of Eanred or Aethelred I (Edilred), based on the length of the inscription and the clear starting 'E' and ending 'REX'.
Perhaps twisting and turning under light will allow you to read the inscription, other wise you might want to consider a slight cleaning.

Thanks echizento. They crop up a lot on ebay, but I wouldn't know how to tell a genuine one. Thanks Medieval. I will try some light cleaning at some point. Once I have updated/uploaded my existing coins onto tantalus. It is slow going and I am developing a squint! I might get more celtic/saxon coins, but perhaps something a little better, and probably from Chris Rudd. At least I will know it is genuine. |

I believe that's a D after the E; I'd go with Aethelred II. And I think the moneyer is MONNE.
