No way that I would ever take the chance of handing down a sealed envelope full of lead slugs from generation to generation. Open it and enjoy your coins.
I could not have said this better myself.

Some people do pay a premium on ebay for proof sets that are unopened. I do not think it is worth it because I like to see the coins before I buy them. It is also a really easy way for someone to scam you. Open them and enjoy!

also when you open them,

To the best of my knowledge the main (inner) envelopes (labeled something like "1958 PC") were never sealed.

The only time they were sealed was when the collector only purchased a single set. In that case they sealed the envelope, addressed it, applied postage to the envelope and dropped it in the mail.

This thread motivated me. Years ago I purchased 100 1957 proof sets. They were previously opened and all were premium quality (spot free and top shelf). One was unopened. I opened it tonight. As expected, high quality spot free coins like the other 99 sets, but no super coins or cameos.

That's my report.

These are never sealed by the Mint. They only became sealed if someone licked and sealed it OR it was exposed to enough humidity to activate the glue.

I like the comment above - if you collect sealed envelops then don't open it. LOLOLOL

Alright boys and girls here are the pictures. The quarter in one coin set has some stains or something. The nickel in the set looks a little dark. That Wheat penny looks really beautiful though

Is an interesting coincidence that I have been following some auctions on the same site you are referring to and if you paid what I think you paid for them, I am concerned for your sake that the premium you payed for them is so far above market value that it will take a couple generations before anyone sees an investment profit on them. ebay typically sees sets like this sell in the $20-$30 range and sets I have seen close on the site in the last week have all ended in the $60-$80 range. Please tell me your sets were the exception and you paid closer to the ebay prices.
