In my opinion, coin flips in storage boxes are cumbersome to look through. Albums are a much easier way to view (flip through) my collection. With that being said, it could be argued that 2x2s and 20-pocket vinyl pages in three-ring binders are better and cheaper than Dansco/Whitman/Etc. This a good point, but I get more enjoyment from them in a Dansco. After all, it is only myself that I need to please. (I should add that I do have coins in 2x2s and I keep them in Dansco albums with twelve-pocket pages.)

It's the environment around the album that determines if the coins will tone or not... not the album itself. They are not air tight.

That probably cannot be said enough.

Quote: Ok, so what's the benefit of having the coins in a nice album, if you then stash them away in ziploc bags and hide them in storage? Might as well just use coin flips and storage boxes at that point. Now this is a human idiot thing. We do stuff like this with almost anything we like. For example look how we all wash, wax, clean our cars then take them out in the rain and/or snow. Look at how many people brag about Dansco Albums looking so rich and then hide them away. So many people want an eating type Silver ware set and it just sits there, hidden away on a shelf. So many of us have STUFF sitting on a shelf, never to see daylight, and yet there it is. Same with so many coins. They are put in Albums, the Albums in a Zip Lock bag, then into a safe or safe deposit box. Why not just bury them in the back yard? We are all a bit nuts about something. Why not coins?

Just as a funny point, I don't see how washing and waxing and then going out in the weather is one of the human idiot things. People wash their car to remove mud/salt/debris so that is doesn't damage the paint/metal. People wax their car because they are going to be out in the weather so that they protect their cars finish from environmental damage. Yes it makes it look nice and shiny but it also protects the finish. Of course after washing and waxing you are going to get more debris on a car from driving it but that is why you maintain it regularly to stop it from building up. To say that is a human idiot thing is kind of silly.

You obviously never met some people that have old cars sitting in their garages and hardly ever take them out. I knew one person that bought a car, put it in his garage, kept it clean and it just sat there. Oddly enough with cars, there are a large variety of people. Some never wash, wax or anything to a car. Others baby them as if they were alive. Same with coins. Coins are a hobby or a business and all of the participants do things differently. Why there are some people that don't even collect coins.

Interesting that upon Googling my question about whether Dansco albums lead to toning, I should find a new thread! I am considering moving to these, but it would be a huge and costly task. The issue is, I do like to visit my collection from time to time, and the regular pages fall apart with repeated handling. The work involved in a format switch isn't an issue, it is perhaps the most enjoyable (obsessive?) part for me, encapsulating and organizing everything. I collect world silver, and put smaller ones in 1.5 x 1.5 flips. Larger than 37mm or so along with anything unusually thick or heavy goes into 2.5 x 2.5 flips. A page of twenty 20+ gram coins eventually wears out the page if I handle them too much. The 30 pocket pages for 1.5"ers hold up, while the 12 pocket pages for the big 2.5" mounts are pretty floppy. So the appeal of Dansco is the rigidity and expected durability of the pages and binders. I wouldn't, however, want to find years later that everything had started to tone. Their pages for flips are an option, because merely being smaller means one page weighs less and has less size to flop around and break. Plus my coins are already in flips, at some point I have to stop buying supplies and re-doing what I've done (ahem, a few times so far). The albums seem more space-saving than regular binders, which are not made for heavy stuff and bow if I'm not careful. I ended up putting most of the the collection in boxes, which makes for compact storage ( very important given the confined space they're stored in), but isn't at all exciting. With the concerns I've mentioned, I'd appreciate your thoughts on whether I should make a switch and if so, whether to go with their traditional pages, the vinyl pages for flips, or something else entirely. Thanks!

Hi glarus... I understand you don't want to buy any new supplies, but I also collect world coins in mostly 1 oz...some of them on the pricey side so I bought a couple of these so I can keep them in air tites, yet still have access to them and appreciate their beauty. Just thought I would share FYI http://www.ebay.com/itm/12107439568...RK:MEBIDX:IT

Please forgive me for taking so long to get back to this thread. I have never seen that before, and it is a neat product! Perhaps one or two would be warranted for what I most enjoy looking at or might want to show others (though I'm not in the habit of doing that right now.) Thanks for the tip!

I don't believe Dansco albums tone coins. I purchased my first one in 1991. I'll never forget how proud I was when I put my first coin in it. After 24 years now, it doesn't show any signs of toning. *Note: It's not the best photo, but good enough to support my theory.
