The cheek is very clean. I grade 66.

That's one heck of a strike. Definitely a 66 in my mind.

I will go with MS 65. Even though there is a minimum of bag marks, the cheek isn't good enough for a 66 IMO.

Are you doing a grading set, or just cornering the market on Gem 1881-S's?

I'm happy with it at 66, but suspect the slab says 65.

Man, I gotta wake up. I know C-B is conscientious about putting these in Grading, but this was in Classic so I moved it for him when I posted last. Except I moved it to Varieties for some reason.

Trying to corner the market

No, I just try and cherry pick undergraded raw coins.

I was wondering why I got two emails about the topic being moved.

Unsurprised. This lighting angle is less kind to the coin, but I think the true grade should average them out. This one's a 66 except maybe from that light angle, meaning perhaps 65 is the appropriate grade. I stand on 66.
Rest in Peace

Sorry I'm late for this one but I would have said 66 based on your page 1 photos but I agree with 65 with your page 2 photos. Good lesson indeed.
