Newcomb is silent as to the rarity which means that it is an R.1. Basically rare die varieties are given numbers from 1 (common die variety) to 8 (extremely rare). There are also ultra rare varieties listed as NC short for not collectable. Meaning museum quality rarity. Coins with R.4 rarity and higher command premiums to hardcore collectors assembling a collection by die variety. If Grellman says it's an R.5 that's hard to argue with but as I said Howard R. Newcomb is silent on the matter. Does this coin appear to be the same as your Grellman attributed coin? Maybe I'm wrong, I'm no J.R. Grellman.

I thought the coin I was sending in to Mr. Grellman was another die type altogether. Honestly I can not tell by looking at it that it is a N-33. Paid my whopping $1.00 fee and took a chance basically.

Looking at a pic from Heritage Auctions my attribution appears to be correct. (I tried to upload the pic but CCF wouldn't let me for some reason). Now I got Stack's saying it's an R.4. Wow now even I'm confused!
Don't mind us. Just a couple of copperheads doing what we do best.

I think an XF grade N-33 should be worth more than $90 paid if it is an R-5 coin. It is rated as Rare on Coinfacts.

O.K. Jerry I retract my statement that $90 was too much. ratio411, you may have gotten a good deal after all. Great thread, this is way better than watching the TV.

Sorry ratio411. I don't want you to think that all large cent collecting is this complicated. I concede that you do have a potentially rare coin and its a great piece for your 7070! Large cent collecting is fun and enjoyable and doesn't have to be all about die varieties or rarity. Sometimes we just go crazy.

Over paid, or not, it's perfect for my 7070, and that is what
I bought it for. I don't buy specifically for investment.

Yes, I know that many varieties look very similar. (You had me pulling out United States Copper Cents 1816-1857 looking up N-17). This is one of the reasons I always try to say "In my opinion....." Attributing Braided Hair Large Cents is difficult but with practice you'll get better. Attributing the Matron Head coins is easier and I recommend beginners start there. But hey, when you have the coin you want to attribute it, right? As long as you like the coin that's all that matters.

After thinking on it a few minutes, and after going to update
my notes in my 7070.. I guess I should ask a ROUGH value of the
1851. I didn't even think to ask, as I don't generally worry
about selling coins.

However, when it comes to my Dansco albums, and especially the
7070, I like to keep notes on a sheet of paper in the albums. To
help my family know approx. values of the expensive stuff, should
anything happen to me... I need to update the large cents, and
mainly would like to know if that $90 is reasonable, or if this
variety is significantly more valuable. Just a ROUGH number for
my family if they ever need a ballpark number.

I think $90 is a good price. The problem is finding a hardcore copper collector who needs that variety. An Au-58 sold for $141 at Heritage auctions in 2012.
