Thanks Echizento, I do like the byzantine coins but am struggling with them. Don't know why I didn't try him as I tried several others before asking  Thanks again. |

 Definitely a Class D Follis. Full inscription reads "IS XS / bASILE / bASIL" Postscript: Before I forget, the inscription translates to "Jesus Christus, King of Kings" - Basileos is Greek for King. Edited by Medieval

Is there any reason that the word " Christ " is missing from the legend ? It was this that threw me off course. I have just checked and I have coins from 4 dynasties in the byzantine list Echizento, a nice mix as well  |

IS = Jesus & XS = Christ - very commonly used as abbreviation.

Its raging now AM, I have focused mainly on the late roman stuff with a smattering of earlier types and some byzantine thrown in for the fun of it  I decided to go the unattributed big bundle route in order to force feed myself as much info as I could, with the help of everyone on here and various search sites its going ok. I have a nice little collection with some rare and scarce coins already so I am very happy. There are a few more that I am struggling with but I wont give up yet, that's a big part of it for me. Med, thanks for clearing that up for me. After I asked I realised that it had been abbreviated, still learning  |

I remember my first Ancient , it was a Gordian III Denarius. My Grandmother(sadly deceased) gave it to me for my 16th Birthday present. I have been hooked ever since. The key to collecting Ancients is knowledge and patience. Both which I think you will acquire in good time.  Edited by Augustus Maximus

Thanks Med & AM, nice to know I'm not being annoying. I will tap into your knowledge over the weekend with those I'm struggling with, not many considering the size of the bundle. Its 2am now and I havnt been to bed earlier than 5am for about a week now, time for some rest  Thx |

Byzantine coins are not easy to identify at first, a lot of the time the legends are missing so that makes it all the more difficult. The earlier coins still used Latin legends but over time they switched to Greek which takes some time to learn.

Nope, I was born and grew up on the European continent - ancient Roman city to be more precise.
But my fascination with cricket started after I moved to Australia - prefer tests to ODIs though.

Echizento cracked it last night Mass, your efforts are still appreciated though Medieval, I gave up watching England play when swanny came into the team. I played what you would call " state " cricket when I was young but an injury cut my career short, I too was a r/arm off spin bowler like swann but at the age of 14 I already had 7 different deliveries I could drop on a sixpence including what they now call the " doosra " Swann had 2, 1 that might & 1 that probably wont. I have seen several bowlers far better than him go through local cricket and never get a chance because of nepotism & cliques that run the sport from top to bottom. Every time I turn it on I see the same " old school tie " brigade and their buddies which irks me somewhat  Still love the game but cant watch England anymore, and yes I prefer test to 1 day too. |
