Lucky me you didn't win it. But I must admit my bid was much higher that the winning bid. Also even it turned out that it wasn't a real 1858 5/8(I am a novice for spotting these still(I did know it was after I got my charlton and read the A of Canada was doubled so my only hint was the little horn from the 8)) I would have been fine with it because of the other dimes in the lot. Thanks your kids for me, mine was long gone to bed :). You must be pacific time? Kids so late?!
Darn Romanian ;) Any follow up on wether he sold it or not?

He put it on ebay at least 3 times over a 6 month period...but I didn't see it in the past year, so perhaps he succeeded. very hard to get at VF and above.

Not initially...initially he listed it for $100 or $200 but someone wrote to him, he cancelled the auction, then relisted for $3000. That makes cherry picking on ebay more difficult, people willing to "spoil the hunt" ;)

My local dealer currently has one for sale in F. Got to look at it the other day, rarity aside, I couldn't bring myself to drop 2.5K on a coin that is slightly different from regular 1858 at 30x the price. Although, those are some really nice coins you guys got there

Before putting up good money, ensure it is certified and has the three diagnostic reverse die-cracks. p.s. he is wanting top dollar at that price, but they are difficult to obtain.

A horizontal Die-Crack from the leaf to rim at 9 o'clock.
A vertical Die-Crack is from near the upper right edge of the Crown to the rim.
A long somewhat vertical (diagonal) Die Crack extends across the mid-section of the reverse.

Thanks for that. The only I could find/see was the left die crack. No trace of the others. Mine is low grade. For me, where I saw that it was, was of course the 8/5 but when I had it in hand the A of Canada.

Boro...D/D in DEI and A/A in CANADA...There is only one die pair for the 1858/1558.
That being said, the D/D in DEI and A/A in CANADA also shows up WITHOUT the 1858/1558. It is a SEPARATE variety.

Wow you are right. I read it but I forgot! It was saying that is it interesting that the 1858/1558 has two different dies. Obverse and reverse... Thanks for helping me remember that rather important part. So how many coins would it possible to have for one single die?
