Very nice, excellent style. Its supposed to be Probus - the bust is excellent. Perhaps this celator used to work for the official mint - or, perhaps this die was blundered and disposed of ad a barbarian took the opportunity to make use of it and sank the rest.

Any idea what you'll do with it?

While the obverse is similar to one of Probus, I'm more inclined to believe that it's an imitation of a Constantinople Commemorative. Both the obverse and reverse are similar to an issues from that series. The reverse is Constantinople seated holding a branch and cornucopia. Though this coin does vary from that design somewhat. Not being an expert I defer to those with more experience.

I see no indication that its trying to be a Constantinople. The bust is in very good Proban style and the helmet has the characteristic point at the front and a radiate crown overlaid. The reverse type is a seated figure not seen in coinage contemporary to the city commemoratives.

It's a fairly modern coin. It is one that could fool (from pictures) but one I have come across before. As always, I leave final judgement to the God's.

The crud on this one is exceptional but typical of the region.

I disagree, there is a type similar to the reverse on the Constantinople series. But than again I've only been collecting ancients for about fifteen years so what do I know?

Kev, so you believe this is a modern copy? Interesting, that makes sense.

I bow to your knowledge Ron, but if you look closely you can see the wheel 'crush' marks from when the disk was slowly squashed instead of being struck.

Everyone has their own ideas, and taste. I have, myself, moved towards early British coinage for the moment but will still buy ancients if the right stuff pops up.

Early enough to make money PP. Anything from the dark ages up to the end of hammered.

@Ben

Ben I first have to buy it from one acquaintance. What would be a reasonable offer for this coin?

@pishpash
Could you help me with the value of this coin?

I could not find any relevant info on this one online.

I don't believe it has much value. I would pay a couple of GBP for it because it is interesting, however, it has a hole in it and from the photograph it looks as though someone has cleaned it down to bare metal, stripping off any patina.

Well, its an interesting type and not an emperor that was frequently barbarised. Unfortunately its received some poor cleaning and was already holed which practically destroys its value. Being that its interesting, id probably pay £5 for it.
