What makes it fake? The first thing is it's not certified...which anyone would have taken it to some antique dealer/coin shop to have it looked at. Even the one Benji found in the junk box...he sent that one in to have it authenicated to NGC. I remember Forum mom posting this link and another back around 9/11 but I can't find the post. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/reidg.../page_7.htmlI am leary of these unless it's been tested since they cost so much! But if it's real...a grading she would go, a grading she would go...hi ho a merry-o a grading she would go!

quote: I'll try your idea when I get to scrubbin it again to get the last of that ol tarnish off it.
Are you for real? If the coin is real, and that's a big if, you would have taken off about 1/4 to 1/2 it's value with your cleaning of it. And you plan to "scrub" the coin again? Great. Hey, why not just put it in a sandblasting cabinet? THAT will get "the last of that ol tarnish off it."

Nothing about this coin jumps out and screams fake to me (I am definately no expert of the series because of price but this one looks pretty darn good if it is). The reason I asked why you thought it was a fake was maybe we all could have a learning experience out of this thread, but I have to say I don't think the "just because its not in a slab its fake" debate is a clever argument

I don't think "not slabbed" is a clever argument...this coming from me (someone who buys raw 99% of the time!) But as Prethen and I had discussed in the past when I started collecting 19th Century Proofs, you have to wonder why someone had not sent a rare raw coin off to be graded and if it was and still not graded...what's wrong with it? But with the local coin shop offering $50 for it, I think I would keep it too especially for a found coin. I had talked to Benji about working out a deal this bust dollar he found in a junk box, but we agreed for both of our peace of mind...send it to a TPG. So if we are concerned about one in this condition is real or not...why not one as nice as Halfabustisbetter's. I say send it off and find out...but it was a free accessory in a car, so who cares, it is a nice conversation piece and a great story! But of course, this whole thread may be joke as you pointed out earlier, Bryan...gotta give HABIB more credit than that!

No, don't give me any credit at all. I was just spoofing on those "I found this coin in my (your choice of relative here)'s (your location here). I thought it would be a little more entertaining and stimulating than "Hey look what I got!"
I actually purchased this coin from a reputable dealer today. I've been frantically scrambling to raise the cash to cover the check I wrote for it, and I think I'm going to just about make it. I was fortunate enough to meet the person from whom it came; a downstate physician who retired up around here. Between 20-30 years ago he spent some of his money (30-50K) on rare and not-so-rare coins. Most of them were purchased for him by a dealer since he did not have the time to buy his own coins. Some appreciated, some didn't, but overall he did pretty well.
This coin was by far the oldest in his collection. I am certain it is genuine, and I believe the cleaning occurred well before he took possession of the coin. The dealer and I agreed on a grade (VF details)...and we agreed on a price that is about the PCGS VG-10 value. With the cleaning, the rim nicks and the light scratches, I thought this was fair. There is simply no way I could come close to affording this grade of a coin problem-free. Ever.
I appreciate all of the comments and hope I haven't engendered any hard feelings with my feeble attempt at satire.
As for slabbing: if I ever think of selling it, I will probably zip it off to ANACS; until then it gets locked up tight, raw.

Nice coin. I have always wanted to get one for myself. (PS: I knew there was something up would your story, but it scared me for a while).

Great coin! It's always great to see raw finds like that out there...gives us all some encouragement to look harder for ungraded treasures! Congrats!

the one thing that picked me off that this had to be a joke is because HABIB isn't some new kid on the block and there was no way he didn't know what this coin was. Even when we do get the new kid coming here asking questions like his we usually determine they are fishing for information they already knew or are trying to peddle the coin to the highest offer. I had to check my calender before I posted the first remark though also to make sure I hadn't skipped a few months in bed or something

That joke was not fair to the forum. As punishment, that coin will be shipped to me where it will be kept in a non mocking, comedic, or toothpaste area for the rest of it's life. PM for my address. Thank you.
