the issue for me is that I HAVE to go hard now, I cannot take a month or 2 off, the pennies are being taken out of circulation. I am one of the few people still able to get these in Canada.

Why can you not take time off?

Why are you one of the few left to get Cents in Canada,I am missing something?

The penny has been discontinued since 2012, and the banks are supposed to send them back to be destroyed. This is in Canada not the USA.

Ok I heard of this going on in Canada so now to get the info first hand from a searcher I get it.

Well,in the name of Searchers you have to,no you do not have to.
Hahaha

First be safe driving around,ok. We all need you fingers in one piece. I am really not sure what you should do.

Sucks and this is a lesson the US Searcher can look at from what you are doing and thinking about when Cents or a type of Cent is going away/taken away.

I would say this first take care of your needs and wants. Be Safe Driving.

I know what you are talkin about Ace , I am still getting pennies anywhere from 30 to 100 rolls a week. I thought two years ago that the banks would stop letting them go out to customers, that was maybe 3000 rolls ago. Just when I think its petering out they call me with a load to pick up. I know that there were billions of pennies out there. I am running out of places to put them.

Hey you, wanna buy some pennies?

Take my advice with a grain of salt as I am one who likes to collect copper US pennies.

I would say go for it if you enjoy the hobby. In 3-5 years you likely won't be able to get them at all so might as well get them while you can! Just make sure u are still doing other things with life.. enjoying family, going to work, etc :)

Your thread is inspiring me to start trying banks for pennies again. Why are there penny rolls out there and yet they have machines in banks that you just dump them in Do people actually give banks "rolls" of pennies still

I guess tellers personality's range from city to city, for some reason surrey seems to be the worst for pennies and bank tellers and when I go to the bank and I ask for pennies I'mgoing to tell them about how theres people on CCF doing this them selves and WILL get answers... or arrested.

Some of those machines charge 8-10% if you don't carry an account. Some people I think still roll up the pennies out of their jars and take them into the bank. I went to two banks today, RBC had none, bank of Nova Scotia had 23 rolls I bought. They are still out there just have to ask.

I used to go to one TD bank in Surrey and they always had 100+ rolls once a month and they said they were waiting for me to return to get them.

The rolls today were nothing special about 30 K. George/Younghead, lots of US 60s, 9 wheats.

Do I need to have an account at those other banks to get them? At TD they didn't charge me anything when I took my coins to the machine, probably because I have an account there.

My experience is I don't need an account to buy pennies as a cash transaction. Once the tellers were willing to give them to me an account was never mentioned and I paid cash. RBC doesn't ask for my account at the business counter, Nova Scotia has never asked for an account. The first time I dumped into a TD coin machine it cost me 8% because I didn't have an account. Signed up for a simple savings account and no more 8% when I dump now.

You are very fortunate to be able to get pennies. I live in a small town with 7 bank branches. I have friends who work at some of these locations and I cannot get one cent. One friend who works at RBC showed me the 20+ boxes that they have but has to follow policy and not give them out. I would have taken them all but had to settle for a box of quarters to search

When I try new banks and they don't automatically say no we cant, I am up front and tell them I am a collector, I am not spending these, once I am done I will return them to an RBC. This has worked a few times. I have also played the "I have gotten them from other banks" but this does not seem to work.

I NEVER start the conversation with "Can I buy pennies?" I always ask to buy quarters and dimes, then silver dollars/50 cents, then pennies, and before they can say anything I explain that I am a collector and go through the rolls and keep the ones I need, and return the rest.

I will update with what I get from the bank later this week.

Ok, so being it was about an hour drive, I decided to make it count. I first stopped at an RBC branch which I have never been before, ended up walking out with 119 rolls of pennies ( as well as quarters and dimes).

Then I went to the bank to pick up the load, I was disappointed when he said he only had 5 boxes and a bit, I was expecting 8 or more. As they say beggars can't be choosers.

I also got quarters and dimes from them, then he says he got specially for me $18 in silver dollars (they were post 68, so no silver), but unexpected bonus.

Then because the bank was dead I through a curve at him, I ask if they had a bag of rejects from the coin machine, he said he would open it up and see. SCORE!

There were a lot of bent coins and the such, a catholic saints charm, a squished penny and then I saw it, a 1941 Canadian dime Score me some silver.

I also found a 1941 ore with 3 crowns, I assumed was swedish and BAmM silver score #2

So now I will add the pennies to the pile to go through, and maybe put these banks on my list for a once in a while lark

timnic44, according to other CCF members they don't actually need to follow policy, they only think they do which is why getting someone of higher authority is something I would do. If there WAS a policy then anything you say wouldn't work and you'd be left with nothing. And it is that that is frustrating to me about it... even though there's no actual policy I can say anything I want and they will never give me pennies because they think they arnt allowed and when other CCF members go and try it they get boat loads of`em... which is wack yo!
