I have never had this happen to me before. I feel embarrassed about it. Asking a seller to cancel is NOT my style.

If he allows returns I am sure he will allow the cancellation. I allow returns and also do cancellations, better a cancellation than a return. I have cancelled orders and the seller did it no problem. People make mistakes.

If I was the seller I would cancel the order with no problem and immediately give you a refund. Chances are you will come back and buy again from me because I was understanding.

if I was the seller I would cancel the sale as well.
however if I was the buyer I would have paid him and just accepted that I had made a mistake

Since it's a BIN and not an auction I'm sure you'll have no problem with getting the sale cancelled. Easier to cancel than for seller and buyer to pay for shipping both ways if you needed to return it.

Looks like no cancellation for me. The seller wrote back and said that since I already paid that ebay doesn't allow cancellations. And goes on to say "What I think is, that you just keep another 1998w because mintage is very limited." On this listing it also says 14 days money back, buyer pays return shipping. Seems I lose out paying return shipping.

Friend - if that's the stupidest thing you've done this week, you're having a pretty good life. Wait until you get it in hand, decide which of the two you like the best and sell the other...

What? Of course ebay allows cancellations after payment! I just did one about a month ago for a buyer. He emailed AFTER PAYING but luckily before I had sent the coin off, that he had mistakenly bought the wrong year coin. I simply refunded his payment in-full via Paypal and all was good - I re-listed the coin then no problem.

This seller is wrong and trying to make you eat it because you admitted it was your mistake. Bad form on their part, IMO.

What I will say is that it can be "slightly costly" on a seller to have this happen. The last time it happened for me ( some months ago ) when I re-listed a BIN/BO "free listing" deal I had been grandfathered into was no longer available so re-listing meant auction or pay-for - so they did screw me over a bit in the "renege" cancellation process as what was free I then had to pay for.

But this seller is just blatantly LYING to you!

Furthermore, I would return it and eat the 1.93 or whatever shipping. You shouldn't have to re-sell it ( possibly taking a loss much greater than the couple bucks shipping costs ). Bad form on the guy to lie to you like that. I detest the slimey sellers out there who take advantage of everyone they CAN. It really erodes the fun out of the hobby!

The worse ones are the "bait-and-switch" brigade who send you the wrong coin (always lower grade or in worse condition) and then try to negotiate for you to keep it with some partial refund scheme - and then try to also weasel out on paying the shipping both ways even when you don't "fall for" their con. Way too many do this for it to be all innocent "human mistake" at play. One did give me a discount on the next purchase ( which I used to get a silver quarter completely free for my aunt's old album ) so he did compensate a bit for his mistake - so I think his switch was a legit human error. Most are not though, IMO!

I am undecided if I will return it and try for a refund. Like I said, the listing says it has a return policy. Seems it would have saved a lot of trouble cancelling it rather than having to go through the return process. Plus I don't know how the sellers reaction would be if I do so or even if he would give me a refund. The seller definitely pulled a fast one. I used to sell and I know you can cancel a transaction.
