Normic, you are absolutely correct your advice about the roll ends transcends the border lines. However, I have a hard time when I see tellers about to hand me what I call "Junk Rolls" the rolls wrapped in cello which are usually current year, or even the tightly white wrapped ones from Churchill.

You have 2 options neither of which is great:

option 1: refuse the rolls, the issue here is that you may have had the teller spend 5-ten minutes getting these rolls, and now you are refusing them, this is an easy way of making enemies at the bank.

option 2: suck it up and dump them at your dump bank, the issue here is that you basically wasted your time effort and are now holding up funds until you dump them.

personally for me it is a toss up between the 2 options, if the teller took more than 1 or 2 minutes getting the rolls, then I happily take what I get (luck of the draw), if its was a quick transaction I may say I prefer not to take them (however this is not a common response for me)

What I get into the habit of doing is just as the teller is turning away to get the rolls, I say clearly, "I would prefer the oldest rolls you have!" this works some of the time, but not always.

I do have a lot of tellers who know me and will just give me all that they have as good CWR (customer wrapped rolls)

I have asked them that before and they said that there is no way of knowing if they are old rolls or new rolls or if the coins inside the rolls are old coins or new coins.

Getting a box of coins from the bank to roll search IMO is kind of like a gamble.

Of coarse it would help if you taught the teller the difference between old and new rolls or even boxes.

Arnt the tightly wrapped ones from Churchill you mentioned the ones that have been through the ARP? The reason why I think that is because every single one of those rolls iv ever gotten had 2001 or 2003 coins and newer in it, why I quit CRH`ing is because I was getting nothing but THOSE rolls so now I know that when I see them to leave them.... and also because I felt like a nuisance to the tellers and to open those kinds of rolls you need to rip them and then your left with a bunch of coins.

mehguy, I hope your reading this!

Coin roll Hunting? people hunt coins for a lot of different reasons, the thrill of the chase, the desire to find a lost treasure. To save a piece of history from the clutches of the ARP (alloy recovery program).

Or they just want to collect coins on the cheap.

That's Me!

Yes you can absolutely find collectible ones, very easily which is yet another reason why people do it.

The alloy recovery programme is a programme that recycles the metal found in old coins, they take all the coins back and sift through them and take all the older ones with certain metal contents out like copper and silver.

Remember, the people that do that programme are any coin collectors worst enemy. When you see a brinks truck make sure you say something nasty to them.

The alloy recovery programme is just really really stupid, some of those old coins that get melted for there metal content could be worth a lot of money and collectible items (especially ones that are antiques) do NOT belong getting melted for the reasons they are.

The alloy recovery programme is a BAD thing!

If you want silver, go with Half Dollars if you can get them.

If you want to build a sets, go with nickels or quarters (for Statehood set).

I bought my first 4 rolls of dimes. unfortunately, none for silver. But I had found 2 american dimes and I believe one of them is an error. its a 1985p and it seems to be double stamp as the face of the coin is quite un-centered and if you were to look at the edge of the coin on the obverse, above the word "liberty", you can tell there are signs of a double stamp. I will be posting images VERY soon.

"What should I start with ? " umm.............lets see . Ah yes !! The first thing you start with is a thick skin as Bank tellers will come to despise you. I was at a CU last week and saw a CRH tossed! Banks just do not want to deal with CRHers. It costs way too much money to order coin. Indeed my bank is now charging 15 cents a roll . IMHO all banks should discourage coin roll hunters.
A far better way to find coins for nothing...........a turned up hat on the street corner...........but be prepared to do some stupid people tricks. !!
In all seriousness visit a local dealer and spend a few bucks looking through junk boxes, or attend a coin show or two. Even a flea market is more promising. With the Asset alloy recovery program in Canada CRH is a total waste of time for the most part.

Pacific Coin, I have to respectfully disagree with your comment. I have been exhaled almost as a savior to most if not all of the 50+ banks I frequent a week. I have reduced all of their overage for coinage. have taken away all of their pennies, so they don't have to ship them away, and they routinely find silver and give it to me.

I have received free silver quarters from one bank, because they were an unknown coin (I offered to pay and was told no)

Granted I have accounts at all of my banks which is one caveat, as the bank is less likely to turn you away if you are actually a member, yes I have in the past been told by one of my banks that the Dump load is a bit much, and I have rectified that solution.

Remember that yes the banks sole mission is not to support our hobbies, I agree with that statement, however they do make money holding my cash, and pay me 0% on holding my money, or on the mortgage to my house, or the car loan or the student loan.
