The obverse seem to have a number of small test marks,
the reverse design I am not familiar with.
I can't rule out of my mind that this coin may be a fantasy or fake.
How was this coin acquired?

Reverse may be referencing the port of Ostia type (?)...

I think that is a forgery work from XIX century...
They have used a genuine "securitas" dupondius and tooled the reverse to create a new design, a ship in this "coin".
But they used a XVII century ship as model instead one of the third century...

Yup, that is definitely cheap! Maybe the guys in the US can recommend dealers in North Carolina that might have junk bins you could rummage. We all have to start somewhere. Some of the guys seem to find good deals. ebay is not a place for newbies until they get a little knowledge under their belts. We will see if anyone comes up with solutions for you. Don't lose heart! |

ebay is still a good place to buy coins cheap but not as easily as before.I tend to look for the larger collections that don't come up for sale to often .Sometimes you can get a good deal but need to be sure about authenticity. I have got some of my best deals by taking a chance but this method is not for every collector.

Deals can be had if you have patience. I picked up a rare (R5) follis of Constantine for under 20.00 (not including shipping). Better yet all the coins on this site are guaranteed for life. Send me a pm and I will tell you the name of the site. It is the only coin of Constantine I have or am likely to have. I thought everyone should have at least one.

Who was selling this 'coin' and for how much ?
I have to admit my first impression of the reverse was something like
"Longshoremen storming SS Bremen" when she docked in New York sporting a 100 ft long swastika in 1936 !
But the longer I look at it the less sure I am of what the heck it is.
If it was cheap I would buy it as a paper weight !
BTW
Back in the mid seventies I did have the honor of meeting one of those longshoremen and shaking his aged and calloused hand.
The newspapers in 1936 (esp the NYT !) had referred to them as "Communist rabble and criminals".
They did in fact make it all the way to the ships stacks and removed the offensive flag.

Something was off with the obverse legend, seemed too clean and large a font type. The reverse, well that was hilarious and the final nail in the coffin. For coins under $20 vcoins and ebay seem the place to go. |
