I agree! Sorry for bringing this up again, but the folks on amother coin forum told me he was reputable and I could buy it sight unseen. I'll give you a link soon. So I trusted them, and this comes up

Okay, I should have done this earlier, but I just got a chance to look at the coinvault website. I looked at the raw coins that are for sale on that site and I did not see one that wasn't overgraded..and I mean by a lot. Take a look at the US 1804 Draped Bust quarter for a prime example.

It is my personal opinion that this dealer should be avoided unless you are looking to purchase a slabbed coin. Even then, I find his prices high.

Just my 2 cents worth.

The black stuff is toning from the copper within the gold alloy.

Which means you've tried to get it off (with a fingernail as stated on another forum), which also explains;

"Its hard to tell if its a scratch"


Now would you refund such a coin? I personally would not.

Gold coins are not cheap and I strongly advise in future you do some research into prices and know if a dealer is charging too much rather than getting buyer's regret later on, either because you don't like the coin or because you've realised it wasn't all it could be.

I DIDNT say that. The dealer told me this, that that was how it was made. Mike, please tell me how my story has changed. I did try to rub it off but there is no damage to the coin that I did, even under 10x magnification. So therefore I could return it, if he would accept it. It's not like I damaged the coin.

With the advent of the internet, more coins (and many other items) are available than ever before. We used to be confined to whatever shops or shows we could find locally. Now, with the internet, we can buy from anywhere.

The advantages of purchasing over the internet come with a responsibility to learn about what we are buying. Most of us learned that the hard way. I would hazard a guess that 95% of our members who have purchased via the internet (this includes ebay) have been burned. Some of us got off cheaper than others. We all had to accept it and learn from it. While $98 seems like a lot of money to you, be grateful that you got your lesson so cheaply. I know of people who lost thousands in bad deals on the internet.

Given all of the information that has been given in this thread, I feel that all questions here have been answered. Please let's consider this thread a closed subject and move on to other subjects.
