Quote:...I sell on Amazon and Amazon requires a white background. Do you have the capability to shoot them on a dark background and then circular crop the image and paste it into a white background? Of course that would take a couple extra steps BUT the end result would be much better.

Another option for the white background is to make a small pedestal on which your coin stands. It produces a result in detail/lighting that is nearly indistinguishable from the different backgrounds, and has the added benefit of removing focus from the texture of the material behind the coin. Behold, the glory of a shoestring budget! Admire my festive diffusing cups! Marvel at what approximately $0.12 worth of supplies can do for you!

I thought my ping pong ball diffusers were jury rigged, but your happy birthday cups have me beat.

I still need a better camera but I have been playing with different settings, moved my lights way up, moved the camera closer, set the shutter speed way down and opened up the aperture. Much better pics from a point and shoot.

I love these do it your self aproaches. A small caution though. Building your own rig can become very addictive.... I am now coming up on 2 years of building and rebuilding my rig. I think developing your own rig teaches you so much more than just going out and getting an off the self system. You are more likely to end up with something of higher quality than you can get retail

I have spent quite a bit of $$$ on new equipment and playing around. I am able to take photos now that are quite acceptable for making Amazon listings. Here is some of my latest...

Be careful, buying camera gear for coin photography can become addictive.

Had to do something if I wanted to sell coins online...I had to be able to show people what they were purchasing...plus it works for a lot of my other items. I have a small photo booth that I shoot pics of small collectible items, glassware and whatnot also. It was a natural progression to upgrade my photography. I find good pictures make or break a sale.
