Why not? For the last ten years I have bought exclusively at coin shows. Dealers have competition a few feet away and they know it.

Just carl and I both love attending coin shows. I assumed that was what he meant and then assumed that is what you meant. Nothing to see here, move along.

Reno32 - There are local coin shows where dealers get together and do business. Often the shows are sponsored by a coin club. Do a search for coin shows with your zip-code.
I do enjoy going to coin shows too. I generally go there to trade duplicates or unwanted coins.

As to your OP, I have noticed that TV coin shows are grossly overpriced. Once in a great while they will have a reasonable deal, but their shipping charges are typically high. These shows do provide useful information on coins. If I see an interesting coin on TV, I'll go to ebay and find the same thing for a lot less money.

The new head honcho at HSN has reformatted the networks aproach. They now present their segments in a forum based q&a type talkshow. For instance there is an hour long weekly series called "the coin collector" or something like that. I saw an interview with the HSN pres a few months ago talking about it. He's done with the old infomercial type ways and it's really increasing revenue apparently

If I am channel surfing it sucks me in, I won't buy from them, knowing I can get what they offer cheaper somewhere else, but I'll still watch, it's fun to watch them pitch the sale. My issue is over spending on collectible silver pieces, or .999 silver.

There's no such thing as a dumb question, but it is dumb NOT to ask questions. You are correct, one has to be careful not only with ebay, but with any other vendors you deal with. It's educating yourself that is key, so you are not taken advantage of. I have passed on several opportunities on ebay due to the seller having a lot of negative feedback, the seller is in another country, or the item didn't look quite right.

Welder, my number one E-bay rule is to never buy a coin from China. Not even slabbed ones. They make outstanding fake slabs and coins. China includes Hong Kong.
I am also very cautious buying from surrounding countries for similar reasons. Granted mint sets, modern circulated coinage, some commemoratives etc are usually exceptions. But never from China.
Rule number two is never buy from someone who has fakes listed in their feedback. Other feedback comments I will take with a grain of salt depending on what it is.
Buying raw coins worth more than a couple hundred bucks is risky if you do not perform your "due diligence" but I will let folk with more experience talk on that topic.
EDIT: Buying any raw coin without doing research is dangerous.
