I don't know how good of a look you got of these dimes but there may be some room for doubt to make you feel better. I remember when I first moved to Maine, where I reside now, and I saw a bunch of silver reeds in the tellers coin tray I arbitrarily bought every single coin from her tray thinking I would be scoring some stuff on what might have been an elderly persons coin dump or something. I felt pretty foolish afterwords when all the coins turned out to be Canadian and I should have known better than to immediately assume it was all silver.

YEAH, that's a bummer. but like previous members posting; their either keeping it for themselves or are holding them for another customer.
Don't forget there are a lot of coin collectors out there asking the same things you ask.... no excuse for teller to just say NO.

Having dated a bank manager, every undocumented (non computerized deposit or withdrawal) is another opportunity for fraud, theft or mistakes in mental bookkeeping. Many tellers are told just not to do it.

I know in my bank, one of the tellers is a collector, so there is never anything in the trays or vaults that isn't spoken for.

Policies differ from one institution to another. I've been hunting for over 35 years and what that gal is doing is just pure power trippin'... she likes to shoot 'em down ha-ha...I've been hunting for over 35 years and have seen it all. I have pleaded for lone Franklins (and won), I have bought solid silver rolls from tellers on the line for many times face value, heard their stories of buying rolls of Morgans at face from elderly customers, I could go on and on with reasons for why they will or will not give up the coin.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

The teller had some obviously silver dimes.

To put it at it's most simplistic level, and bluntly, it's none of your business what's in the cashier's till. You do not have the right to demand specific coins/bills.

Let me ask you this, what if you were the teller? You'd gladly give them to the next person that asked if you had any silver coins? Sure you would right? You'd be "mean" too.

Ok, that was just what I was wondering. Thank you.

Hmmm..
I dont reply to this kind of post much..

But
you DO HAVE THE RIGHT TO ASK IF YOU WANT TO.

Just be prepared for a 'NO"

My best story:

I went to a teller, got a box of cents, asked for any loose half dollars. The teller said she does not have any. The teller next to her speaks up and says 'yes you do!, customers come first". turns out she had 3 40% kennedy's, and she sold them to me for face.

I got the idea they did not like each other.

Get in the habit of asking, most that can happen is you get a no.

This pretty much sums it up in my opinion. You can ask, but the teller certainly has the right to refuse.

The best thing you can do here is just to take your business to another branch, I've tried different branches and 2 of them that are both in less crowded areas seem to have given me the best service.

An example of outstanding customer service would be to give the customer what they wanted. But the bottom line is, seeing something doesn't make it yours.

When I was a cashier, I had all sorts of odd requests. Lots of people would gun for my halves; others would shove them back and refuse them. One customer asked for all of his change in dollar bills and quarters. I tried to be as accommodating as possible, but it was ultimately my judgment call to say "no" if a customer wanted 57 $1 bills from my till, or for me to dig through to see if I had any bicentennial quarters.

Technically speaking, the teller doesn't even have to take your request for specific denominations, as long as they are giving you what is due.

You have to cultivate a relationship when you find one, or move to a different window if you don't. Get to know the head teller at a small local branch. They have access to everything and are sometimes, cough, looking for a fence. Seriously.
