I seem to get Ikes weekly from the bank. They really don't do anything for me, but I keep the nicer ones. The rest I toss into a drawer until the one bigger coin show comes along. I then use them to trade for things I really want. Usually I get about 20 cents over face per coin. It's a better return on my money than letting it sit in a savings account.

I've nearly completed a set from circulation, I'm just missing the 1973D.
Whenever I find a bank that has any I get them and them save up the spares until I have 100 and then list the extras on ebay.

I see many people hoard the Ike dollars, is there a reason why?

It is the last dollar coin that doesn't look like a quarter or arcade token.

I got like 30 ikes form a bank when I went in trying to get halves one time and there was 5 of each 1973. I still havent decided what to do with them or put them in flips yet, just left them in the envelope the bank had them in since my folder doesn't have a hole for them.

Guy in charge of SBA design:What should we put on the reverse of the new SBA dollar? Hmm, maybe JUST REUSE THE IKE REVERSE DESIGN.

Not to say I don't like the Ike reverse, they just could've freshened up for the SBA...

Because you'd get funny looks if you tried to spend one. I spent a $2 bill at a fast-food place a few years ago, and the kid at the counter had to go back and ask his manger if he should accept it.

Same with halves... I blame the education system.

I imagined that you had the same look on your face as the cashier when I try to spend a half at 7-Eleven...

A while ago I was able to get a few $1000 bags of Ikes from my Bank. I have 2 complete sets now, minus the Proofs. I got the Proofs from my Local Coin Shop. I'm still sitting on over $300. I just can't seemed to part with them. Most are in BU condition.

I asked the Bank Manager today if she could get any more. She told me that the Fed will not release them any longer and the Fed is actually attempting to have Banks return any on hand. Take it for what it's worth? I tend to believer her, she has always ordered any coins I wanted.

I will continue to hoard them.
