The amount of coins and the mintages coming along with it borderlines on the ridiculous. It's getting to the point that with the exception of a few, most of the coins are worth nothing more than bullion within a year of release.

Yes, aside from money wasted on the mass churnings of RCM, I think the entire paradigm of what is coin (money) is also shifting over time. It used to represent something very important - the ability to put food on the table, have a decent place to live, pay for children's education. To the older generation, using credit or surviving on handouts was the ultimate of shameful. I don't quite understand the change, maybe it's because we've begun to believe "the government" is ultimately responsible for our livelihood and well-being instead, but it seems RCM, especially by the fantasy themes, is at work to actively demean the significance of what money represents as well.

One question: will the 50 cent piece be minted with its regular design (coat of arms)? There are only 5 categories and six coins.

According the RCM's news release, there's no indication of what's planned other than the special design of the five. OTTAWA, ONTARIO, MARCH 11, 2015 - To celebrate Canada's upcoming 150th anniversary, the Royal Canadian Mint is inviting Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast to design the 5-cent, 10-cent, 25-cent, one-dollar and two-dollar coins that will circulate in 2017. http://www.mint.ca/store/news/royal....V7ivJnjOerU

Without getting into the politics and "PC" angle, the RCM has used these contests many times in the past to generate interest in upcoming coins. Personally, I'm still hoping for new issues using the 1967 designs.

Same for me. The 1967 designs would be my first choice for circulating coins. Humm... what animal for the toonie... I vote for the snapping turtle or the moose. Probably way too late to influence the RCM but I still dream that they would use this theme for circulation coins and not only NCLT (which I'm sure they will but I won't be a client).

A brief synopsis of the 1967 series and how the series designed by Alex Coville was chosen: http://www.coinscan.com/des/1967d.htmlEven if, for whatever reason, it was deemed that the same set could not reissued for the 150th anniversary, it's unfortunate a different set of birds and animals were not chosen for their appropriate symbolic significance. Aboriginal totems are also filled with interesting imagery in the same way and it would have been an excellent opportunity for the Govt of Canada to celebrate the coming together of two different cultures.

Considering the various possibilities were copied to page 1 of this thread, I thought it'd be interesting to compare what got chosen. This is a screenshot from the Unveiling video posted on RCM's Facebook:

I don't think I voted for any of the winners.

Quote: To everyone complaining about "childish designs"... this contest was only open to children 12 and under. If I remember correctly only the last category was restricted to 12 & under. That said I think the winner was a good choice.
