It is definitely a CC piece, since the extended census of the top 19 pieces extends all they way down to a G-6. The top ten goes down to a F-12 coin.

I'm not even sure that is corrosion, that might just be a planchet defect. There is no discoloration in that spot. The red has me wondering if this has been cleaned and retoned in the past. With that all said. I'm going to say this coin would grade as 30 using EAC guidelines. Not having seen the two 30's at the top of the CC (a 30/Choice and a 30/Average), my guess is that this would fit somewhere after the 30/Average in 3rd place in the CC if using Noyes Penny Prices 3rd Edition. Just a nice coin. Congrats! I imagine EAC would love to know about this coin.

Thank you, everybody. Conder, thanks for confirmation. I would hope too that the coin would straight-grade, no details, although I have no intention of having this encapsulated. In this particular case, I would have to say the usual 'I have seen a lot worse in straight TPG holders', and I have. I am not sure about the red, of course, but the red halo may possibly be faint remnants of original colour. It is certainly not cleaning.

Beautiful ! IMO it is a 40. Hopefully, and I think it might, the rough areas will be considered non-detail concerns. Congratulations on owning that beauty :)

That is one nice large cent. I was happy to pick up a 1797 large cent yesterday, but it is no where near as nice as this one. Congrats!

EFlargeCents, thank you very much for the link. Very interesting! Both coins are in fact comparable, even if the darkish tone and reverse texture may not be to everyone's taste. It does have a strong strike. however. Each has it pluses and minuses, as one may expect.
You mention two VF30's? any idea where I could find photos of those? Thanks again for the link.

Coin is super enlarged-- In hand coin would look very sharp and picture is off in color a bit hazy confusing---lol. Its tricky taking coin pictures, but ill give this XF 40 if coin in hand is indeed not dry as it seems with the picture. Ruff spots is very minor. Give us another picture--this is a great coin

GERMANICVS - once again you bring us an incredible coin. I posted a new 1798 acquisition a couple of weeks ago that is not even close to yours. Congratulations

cipster, I remember your S-184 - I liked that coin a lot as it had nice detail and even surfaces.
In the meantime, I think I have found the S-163 which shares #1 place in the CC with a coin in the ANS. It was the Noyes plate coin, sold by Goldbergs in 2009 as part of the Holmes Collection, lot 298. A superior and beautiful coin graded (as EFlargeCents mentioned) VF30.
