Quote: Its just in a capsule like the some of the uncirc sets. I have opened up the penny and 50c with no issues. Nope - this is like the 2006 proof Lucky Loon and 2005 Poppy bookmark coins. It takes a _lot_ to free that coin. (I used liquid nitrogen to free mine.)

Did I get the resin off? Not quite yet, lol. One side is complete but some residue left. I have been putting coins trapped like this in the quick freeze side on my fridge. :) The expansion and contraction with the temperature change seems to work somewhat. I haven't looked at the couple I have in the freezer for a month or so though.
Roger...how long does it take for the liquid nitrogen to do its thing?

Its tough stuff. Some say boil, or freeze.
The gold plating stayed on the silver ok with resin removal
The red poppy on the 2006(?) quarter I tried peeled off with the resin

I boiled mine. BTW - I had a really interesting error coin and eventually sold it on ebay.

Boiled, hmmm? I'll give it a go, lol. Sounds like a good job for tomorrow...I was worried the gold would come off.

Do I understand if I want to liberate the cent from the report, it will be covered in something. I figured it was housed in a capsule within the report. I guess my will never be freed. AS I don't want to bother with boiling or freezing it. They are nicely done coins. They seem to mark the era of lower mintage nclt coins.

I didn't have to boil mine at all for the cent and 50c. Just have to peel the back layer of plastic is the 5c different?

qvb are you saying its easy to free the penny and there's no residue. I don't want to go through all the steps as posted above. I did find the report an interesting read. its seems when they started to make major changes to collector coins and mintages. I have only read the 2003 report. I need to read some current ones. What does the fifty cent coin look like. I haven't seen one yet.

For the penny and 50c piece I just removed the capsule from the book, cut the corners of the plastic (make sure to not cut close to the penny), then with my finger nail I was able to separate the bottom and top layer of the capsule. No residue and No boiling required. But based on what SPP said looks like the 5c is different.

These nickels have become quite pricy. Starting at $89-$211 on ebay. Gatewest has 1 for $109, seems like there must be some demand for these coins nowadays. I wonder what changes in perception to make a coin go from little interest to highly desirable. Lets face it, it is the same coin after all. It shows how a coins popularity can change years later.

A nice subset of this nickel would be to have all its different varieties. The circulation, silver proof, report, and the 1 oz silver. All together would make a stunning set.
