Keep in mind that many sellers (probably most, if they do a fair amount of business) have lots set up to go on ebay as much as 30 days in advance. In other words, when the seller did the work to get the lot ready to hit ebay may have been some time ago. So even if they are having 10-15 new lots appear every day, it doesn't mean they actually did the work each of those days. Even if you check their feedback responses, many of those are also automated, so even if you see a seller leaving feedback every day it doesn't mean they are actually doing it by hand. Depending on the seller, the "business" as it appears on ebay may not have anything to do with when they are actually doing the work. Of course, if they are not MAILING items very fast after a sale, that will hurt them a lot. Getting ticked on the stars is even worse than a negative for most sellers.

Quote: And I actually did message him upfront asking if it would be ok to shop over multiple days and, again, never got a response. And that message was sent a week ago now. And you bought his coins anyway without waiting for a response?

Quote: And you bought his coins anyway without waiting for a response? Yes. His listings didn't specify a time frame on combined shipping and he's been an eBayer since like 2002 with over 7000 feedback 100% positive, so I felt pretty comfortable in going ahead and doing it. I guess this is what I get for making assumptions, but I figured I would be ok.

As sellers, what do professional dealers do in this sort of situation?

That's a big mistake on your part .the seller has to state in his listing that he will combine postage if you buy within 2 to 4 day period. If he doesn't state that, he's under no obligation to do so. pay the guy proper postage , learn by your mistake ,and have a Merry Christmas !

And I don't mind to do that if he at least responds to my message and tells me as much, but I'm not going to pay before I know for sure.
I don't think I'm in the wrong here at least waiting on a response from the seller before I do anything.

As a seller for 8 years on ebay (on&off) I would respond to your inquire & combine shipping. I've done it before & will do it again. As a buyer I would Never Never withhold payment for a week because I made the Wrong assumption as you even stated you did. That's just wrong but do as you like. Says a lot about ones character.

I started this thread for advice on how to handle this transaction, not for an assault on my character, but thank you for your input.

You're right! You ask for opinions on how to handle the transaction. Sorry you didn't like the response's given but you did ask. As far as an assault on your character goes, "You did that all by yourself". I just pointed out the facts of your transaction

I think your unprovoked personal attack has revealed far more about your character than anything I have posted in this thread has revealed about mine and I will just leave it at that. I hope you have a wonderful evening and a Merry Christmas.
And for what it's worth, after reading the responses in this thread and thinking it over, I went ahead and just paid for the coins. I'm sure this doesn't fit your narrative of what you thought my character was based on a couple of posts, but perhaps this will teach you a lesson in prematurely judging people.
The only reason I waited this long to pay was to give the seller a chance to respond/gauge my options. Now that I have a better grasp of my options and have heard other input, it made my decision quite clear. Thanks to everyone who gave their input on the matter.

So the seller actually messaged me back today saying he would combine the shipping, so I'll wind up getting the difference back! Glad this is all fully resolved now.

Combined shipping is not free for added coins. Sometimes it is something off. Two per package is half price, a reasonable situation, and may be to avoid Priority Shipping by having too heavy of a package.
