I am at AU 55. looks like wear on the bust and curl above her forehead. On reverse it looks like slight wear on top of eagles head. The toning on this is spectacular. I would be a buyer all day for this if I had the money. Great pickup.

BH1964 is right - it is hard to differentiate between weak strike and wear on this particular coin. But I think the wear on the bust is the giveaway - it is not near the center where most strike weakness would be, but near the rim.

My thought is AU-53 going by the apparent wear. However, since eye-appeal and luster are part of an AU grade, I'd venture as high as AU-55, as this coin really does have both.

I normally don't go for toned coins, but this one is beautiful, more so than the pictures reveal. I told TypeCoin that if he didn't buy it, I would have!

And the result is:

1832-Capped-Bust-Half-Dollar.-You-Vs-PCGS---Grade-Added-1/5/16

1832-Capped-Bust-Half-Dollar.-You-Vs-PCGS---Grade-Added-1/5/16

So, do you agree with PCGS? Everyone at my Coin Club, including Bill Fivaz, disagreed with PCGS and called the toning natural.

My honest opinion is it's a 2nd skin. That doesn't make it artificially toned though. Many, many coins with a 2nd skin get slabbed problem-free and this one probably would too if submitted a couple more times.

There is a story behind that which goes back well into my youth. Perhaps I will endeavour to share it one day.
