Here is a past topic on a 53 PL set: https://goccf.com/t/105004Also, the Charlton starts listing PL sets in 1953. There may be more to this. I'm sure someone on here will know.

So it is still safe for me to search for a 1953 sf PL as well as MS, even though there seems to be some disparity in different reference sites?
I don't really care if the one I find is PL or MS. Just want full red.

CC and C is selling a 1953 red SF in this ICCS set: http://www.cdncoin.com/product-p/6195pl1953.htmIf you're interested, given an individual coin price is quoted, they might help you out. To add: there's also an "antique red beautiful" on ebay.ca that looks very much like a SF, although the seller does not indicate the variety.

Thanks. I found these sites as well in my searches. That ICCS one from CC and C I found before but I am in disagreement with ICCS depictions of red, which I have found before on coins for sale. I would never call that coin red and I have found others from them with similar colouration that to me were not red.
That "antique red beautiful" one looks nice but I know nothing about NNC grading and if they didn't even bother to add a major variety to their description, it smells funny as well.

Do not touch that NNC coin. They have a notorious reputation for overgrading.

I didn't think NCC was actually a grading company, could be wrong. But as is often said, buy the coin not the package.
The ICCS PL65, difficult to say how red it might be but you're right, red is not always red.
Adding a final suggestion. CCF has a buy/sell forum I believe? But I don't know how many posts are required in order to be eligible to access it. 100?

Well, that article is frustrating. I see lots of NSF in full red for sale but nothing in SF yet the article says that the NSF version is harder to find. I also so far have seen all the denominations for sale as well. Not hard to find yet this one seems to be impossible. The joy of the hunt.

@Tomswift Good luck in your quest for the PL I was on hunt for same type but ended up with a MS65 SF to complete my set a bit pricey but was happy to get it. My understanding was it would only be found in a PL set but ya never know, it sure seems to be elusive.

I would be happy with MS-63 and up if it is red but it seems hard to find. I just got an ebay notice finding the NSF in 64 and 65 full red for good prices. These I see all the time. SF? Never. The few that have come up were in no way red. The hunt continues.

Hi, I just read your post about the SF Red 1953 cent. Sorry for the 8 months lateness to the party. Simply to say that I sold one in an auction last week.
A real red is really though. The story goes as follow, according to a great coin guy, in 1953, all saved rolls and rolls of coins. Half year through, collectors had all they needed/wanted. Stop the gathering, began the SF series without anyone noticing, none took more, thus the rarity of it in high end grade being so difficult to get. When I bought one from him he told me he found 22 coins in a roll. In 40+ years of collecting, he never saw that. When I bought it, it was the last of all of them, he said he sold them easily because people knew it was rare and all needed one.
Hope you found one or what I said explains a bit of the mystery for this hard one to get.

That was probably yours then I saw at auction last week. Way too rich for me. Thanks for the info though. I have pretty much given up finding this coin and plan to look for other things.
