Thank you Northerncoins nice and inexpensive item. I would like them be serialized (anyway it "Special Wrap", so why just not to stamp the serial number) Interesting, what will RCM mint for 2017

There is still 32,000 rolls, that's quite a few since not many are ever broken apart.

Question concerning the orientation of the coins in these rolls. Does the orientation of the coins on the end of these rolls have a bearing on the premium (ie heads on both ends or coat of arms on both ends)? Just curious or do they get rolled randomly?

I am sure we can get discounted rolls in next year.... some previous years' rolls were sold $20 by some dealers just months ago, and if lucky, we may only pay 5% GST, rather than GST+PST in some PTs

I think one end is the bust side and the other end is the coat of arms, just looking at a few rolls that I have, but I am sure some creative ebay seller will find a way to squeeze out extra money if they have a roll with a bust or coat of arms on each end... error roll... lol

This item, just my preference, nothing else, I prefer to get from the Mint. Cause it like "Mint rolls"...and not Bank or dealer rolls. (post- "trauma" from 2011, when I called the Mint month after release and they were sold out).

It's somewhat amusing to contemplate - the 50c piece - and its important role in circulation coinage considering it was the largest decimal coin for decades, prior to the introduction of the SD in 1935. Even though it's existence in a pocket full of change now at best is a long ago memory, for any of us who recall that, being handed a 50c was equally thrilling as getting a new bright red glowing copper penny.
Ever since 2013 and the introduction of "designer roll" packaging, rather regal, a different colour each year, for this reason it's regained a certain level of popularity. Well deserved, in my opinion.....

your comment about receiving a 'new bright red glowing copper penny' is my frustration of the mint continuing to release 50c pieces, despite being 'out of circulation for decades'(true definition of NCLT). Why couldn't they continue releasing the pennies in the same manner as they continue to this day, with the 50cent?

That is another opportunity for the RCM. I'm sure we will see something with pennies for 2017.

They certainly could, if they chose to. The one cent denomination remains on the list of eligible NCLT coinage on the Royal Canadian Mint Act. Something similar occurred in 1967 when the silver dollar was no longer minted for circulation. Due to high collector demand, RCM began selling collector silver dollars in 1971 through to present day. The difference between the 50c roll though, is technically they're minted for circulation although they fall into a grey area as they're not officially removed from the circulated coin list. Doesn't really make sense why not. I can't think of one good reason other than it's a comfortable number, a total of six different coins, the toonie now taking over the space of the penny. But perhaps RCM doesn't realize there may be a keen interest in collector 1c, I'd expect especially if they were issued in copper once again? The current focus seems to be mainly on what was once considered "giftware". In my opinion whenever there's a crossover between circulation and NCLT, it contributes positively to both types of coin collecting.

From all the aspects, that Wildflower mentioned, I think, the difference, that the Penny minted from copper/bronze (additional metal), and 50c same as other coins. Except this - business. To Mint the 1c coin mint spends more, and revenue from selling Penny rolls annually will be lower, rather "making money" on 50c rolls.

To clarify, yes thanks Silveroid I agree, I think if the mint were ever to sell collector copper pennies by annual issue, it wouldn't be by the roll. They'd be sold as singles encased in a capsule within a clamshell...and priced accordingly. But then comes Special Edition pennies, and pennies in sets whereby you must buy the entire set just for the sake of the penny..... The 50c rolls are not NCLT even though the can be ordered directly from RCM. They'd be graded MS in the same way as a new 25c, from a mint roll from a bank, would be.

Clearly 32,000 rolls/800,000 coins is way too much. More than 5 months after their release only 87% have been sold by the Mint.
''Previous 50-cent special wraps sold out quickly. Avoid disappointment, order yours today! '' Well I think some dealers sitting on large inventories may soon start to sell them for less than $24.95...

There is legislation to end the penny production, they might produce a 10 kilo penny

I lost interest in these after they increased the mintage from 15000 in 2013. Personally 15000 was too high but anyways, I guess they need to make a profit like any other business. If it takes all year to "sellout" the 2016 roll at 32000 mintage they will have made a decent profit from small three-ply nickel finish plated steel discs.
