Quote:@Silveroid - how are you sure to get the real coin from ebay and not a copy? I guess here it is easier but if the SD is the same just how can you be sure not get a "normal" SD with some 3rd party gold plating? There is no certificate... nothing Buy them from reputable coin dealers or Coin sellers with a good reputation ( feed back etc) on ebay with good return policies. I know Angus coins on ebay splits the sets and sells them, I actually bought a few from them before. I sometimes sell a few split up sets but only once in a blue moon sort of thing. But really, $99 CA isn't a lot and then you have the whole set, complete with CoA etc but its when sets cost $200 plus then I can see buying one or two of the coins separately. Plus Angus always has auctions running on these singles from sets as do other sellers, sometimes you can get a good deal on one. One thing though, these coins are always better left in there set/holder etc, when a set is split up the coins risk getting touched/scratched/ dirty what have you. If you have ever tried to remove a coin from these holders you will know what I am talking about...

I'm surprised this year that the mintage was cut to 12500 from 20000 last year, although it might be only that many were sold. But that's quite a significant reduction year over year, especially when considering this SD is significantly unique in appearance.
For that reason I also ordered a set, don't want to wait and then end up paying more on the secondary market.

Probably not, but comparing the current "good" price to the original issue price of some of the past Special Edition single silver dollars........on the buying end of things.......ouch, ouch! Meanwhile for years and years I have faithfully bought only proof sets, with the intent to "some day" complete a SD collection. What was I thinking? Therefore my new motto has become that of RCM "Buy Now!"

it is unlikely. At a coin show a few months ago there were tons of recent proof sets for sale. This SD is a nice coin. I bet the RCM would sell a lot more in individual clamshells rather than resorting to packaging gimmicks.

Smart tactics for RCM could be to issue limited mintage sets (3K-5K for example), and after it, when the sets will be sold-out, to issue individual coin (the SD). This was done for 1935 - 2010 and 1911 - 2011 sets....and looks like everyone is happy. The sets keeping their value, and collectors, who didn't want to overpay for set - enjoy the individual affordable Silver Dollar.

Yes good suggestion. That would be a win-win!

I remember debating whether I wanted to order just the individual coin or both the set and single coin. I think it would be a mistake - and a subject of much derisive debate - if the RCM issued special edition individual coins only after the sell-out of a set that contains it. Folks here debated for pages about the RCM increasing the number of cardboard boxes for the $20-for-$20 coins after they released a figure for the initial production! I can only imagine the level of negative comments that would ensue if the RCM upped the "limited edition" mintage of an actual coin after the fact.

Yes, you right, Commems
I didn't take in account, that if the single SD will be released later, so not clear how will be the mintage represented initially.
So yes, both products should be simultaneously released, giving opportunity to purchase the "main coin" for all.

Since 2012, when the $99 Proof set - Silver Dollar was first released as a secondary type of Proof set (the other, appx $230 and all coins silver) it's interesting to observe the diminishing mintage. Meanwhile the mintage of the higher priced silver Proof Set has remained more or less constant at 20000/25000. While not all sets may have been sell-outs, mintage numbers do indicate how many sets RCM forecasts it may sell. Look at the numbers fall: 2012 - 40000 2013 - not issued (Silver Dollar included in Specimen Set mintage 20000) 2014 - 30000 2015 - 20000 2016 - 12500

darn - I guess there are 3 versions of 100th Anniversary of the Canadian Arctic Expedition going to have to check to see which one I'm missing - I know I have the Gold plated version - missing either the Proof or Specimen

There are actually four 2013 Canadian Arctic Expedition SDs: Proof, Gold-plated Proof, Specimen and Brilliant Uncirculated.

Yes that's true, I just don't collect the BU version and wouldn't bother with this except that 2013 is the only year that a Specimen SD is minted

12,500 is still too many. Until the mint reduces numbers to under 5000 for most coins in the 60-140 dollar range, the secondary market values will never surpass the original purchase price and in most cases will remain in the 50% or lower range.

Just FYI for those who ordered this set but are still waiting for its delivery... I called the RCM on Friday to check on the shipping status of my set. I was told that my order did not get filled with the first batch of the coins that were produced. So, I need to wait until the next batch is ready which is currently due at the end of May with fulfillment to customers anticipated in early June.
