I normally dump at my CU where they have a coin machine. They don't charge for me to dump, probably due to my account balance. I recently dumped $5k. I notified them that I was going to be dumping some coin and asked when would be a good time for them. I told them the amount. We worked out a time and it went smoothly.
I have had people waiting to use the machine or see a specialist ask me where I get all those coins. I just tell them the truth, I order them from another Bank. About 50% of the people don't even know they make Half Dollars. I sometimes save some of the shiny ones for last so I can give them to the kids.
I haven't dumped in a couple of months. But I don't anticipate any changes when I start back up.

I don't get too many halves to search; maybe $100 max here and there. I post now and then in the project 100K half dollars thread so I try to spend as much as I can of what I get and just mix the rest in with my normal dump. I find that not dumping all the same denomination seems less suspicious.

I used to be secretive about it, almost like CRHing was a shameful activity and then I just decided to be honest. I'm sure the tellers are smart enough to figure it out. Usually I say I'm after old coins and I talk vaguely talk about my successes as everyone wants to be part of the win. I tell them about "oh I found two walking liberties the other day" I don't get into I found X ounces of silver. One is a hobby which people can support, the other sounds like you're making the bank do the dirty work for you to make money.
Also when you're looking for old stuff people will ask what else you're interested in, I.E. Ike's and other large coins etc...

That is good advice Layer Cake, and welcome to CCF -
You are right, never mention the word silver to tellers or bank managers. That's the best way to have it all dry up on the line overnight, I've seen it happen many times. I've also seen some very nice silver and coin collections from tellers over the years, even bought some collectible coins from them.

I agree, describe it as fun or a challenge, never mention the silver.

"I found them. They were just sitting in some old guy's house. On an unrelated note, have you ever looked up lockpicking tutorials on youtube? It's a lot harder than they make it look in the movies."

It's funny to me how banks can look down on legal tender. Same with paying for stuff with cents. If it wasn't money, I could see being upset. Back when you could pump gas before you paid I used to use cents quite a bit. When they said I couldn't, I'd just say ok and pick them up and start walking out. Then they get all huffy because I wasn't paying, and I pointed out I tried to and you didn't want it. Just because it's not green paper doesn't mean its no good.

I believe honesty is the best policy.
I am truly a coin collector. I'm after more than the silver coins, though I consider the silver coins special because they remind me of my grandfather and the coin collection he shared with me before he passed away.
I recently deposited about $2,500 in halves at a bank. I called ahead and confirmed the bank would accept a large amount of loose halves, as in about $2K worth. They said as long as I had an account with them, they had a coin counter, so it would not be a problem.
The next day I brought in the coins and the teller asked me where I got all of them. I gave an honest answer in that I had ordered them from a local credit union. The teller was very cordial and didn't even ask me if I had an account at her bank. She said there were other people who brought in a lot of coins from time to time, so I was not the only one. She brought out a cart on which I placed my buckets of halves, and asked me to have a seat while she ran the coins through the coin counter. When she returned she asked if I would like to deposit the coins or have cash. I asked for cash, which she politely counted out, and handed me my empty buckets.
Then I asked her is I could buy her a coffee or something as a thank you for dealing with the heavy, noisy coins. She genuinely appreciated my offer, but told me handling the coins was simply part of her job, and it was no problem, so she declined my offer. I admit she was an attractive lady, which was an additional bonus :)
Again, I believe honesty is the best policy.

Berto, that's cool! And I agree with you about honesty being the best policy. Fortunately, my main bank encourages me... Conversely, B of A (my old bank) does everything possible to discourage me...
And don't get me started with the attractive ladies working at the banks... There are lots of them at my three branches. Two in particular who kind of drive me crazy. :)

Like I said in an earlier post I try to dump in out of town branches when I go, but today I dumped 300 in dimes and 100 in nickels and I walked in the door to the bank, which I had never been to this branch before she said I hope you have lots of coin in your tote that I was carrying and she said we are always in need of coin. I said really I can bring more if you want me to. She said yes definatly. She said the bank manager never orders enough coin and they are always short. I said I have plenty more where this came from and she and the other tellers said bring it on, we will take all you got. I proceededed to tell her I look through coins for my collections and she said it doesn't matter cause it all spends the same,so I told her I would be back in a few days to bring in another load. She said I will be here waiting because she said I can't stand when merchants or customers come in and ask for a few rolls and I can't provide them. So I'm going to use them as my dump bank for a while and see how it goes, luckily it's close to my house about 10 mins away.

sometimes tell the tellers that I planted some quarters and dimes in the back garden and finally this year they started to produce for me. All with a straight face. I love their responses.

I usually say, "wherever I can." of course only new employees ask this because the rest already know.
