Looks like it had an old cleaning, but if you look closely above the date, you'll see that it's got the rays clashed onto the obverse of the coin

It does not appear cleaned to me. Solid high EF and most attractive.

Huh that is a good point CoinCollector2000, didn't notice that. I know nothing when it comes to mint errors so would the rays on the obv be indicative of an error or a counterfeit? Just searched and it doesn't appear to be a common variety of this coin that I could find.

That would be what is known as a die clash, correct?

A lot of these old silver coins have had a layer of tarish removed from them. This appears to be that way, but it's the look that most people call "original." If the coin is priced at EF-40 money, it's a fair deal. If these coins had not had a little work done on them, they would be black as coal by now. That's the terminal state for silver tarnish.

I had a couple of examples of this type in ANACS EF-45 holders when I was a dealer. I sold them for something like $125, and that was 10 years ago.

It's a nice coin. I think the reverse is clashed too. But no bidding frenzy, so the price is borderline at best. Let's see if it gets any bids.

I bought a coin from this seller and didn't receive the coin pictured. Reasoning was that the coin I received was better than the picture. That point alone was debatable. I bought the coin for the repunched mmark and of course the one I received didn't have it so be careful buying this coin based on clash marks that you see. The coin you get may not be the one you bought. Sure the return policy but who wants to go through that at your own expense?

And on the reverse you can see the base of ground (for lack of a better term) clashed above the eagles head.

This seller has a reputation for peddling problem coins, often cleaned. That said, this quarter doesn't appear to be harshly cleaned, but the pic may be altered. I once returned a coin to this seller, one that looked polished in hand, but the pic didn't evidence same. The obverse marks, tiny digs on this 1853 quarter, I find distracting. The die clashing is cool. IMHO, the coin is maybe worth $60-$70.

If that is true I would recommend the OP ask the seller for additional pictures which he can save to ensure he gets the same coin if that is the one he truly wants.

If the seller pulls a bait and switch you can file a claim with ebay and with the additional evidence of the photos requested the seller would have to pay return shipping.

Or the seller may block the OP from bidding if he gets too demanding.

Catch 22

@jack jeckel ... The quote you have is not what I wrote. I believe it was the same coin, but the pic was perhaps doctored or adjusted so as to mask the polishing. On the plus side, the seller did accept the return without question and provide a rebate.

Ah just caught up on this. Thank you all for the input. Just based on some member's experiences, I think I may skip on this one especially if people were getting coins not pictured. And the price seemed fair (if no one else bid on it), but I can wait. I also found another quarter NGC graded VF30 for that looks pretty nice too so I may go with that one. Thanks again all!

Mr. Kairu ... I just spotted this 1853, a VF+, that may be what you're seeking. It's certified and the seller is one of our CCF members. In comparing it to similar pieces on ebay, the price seems most reasonable.
