Your thread title is misleading, there were no one cent coins made in 2013.

waterboy, you'll have to XRF it to figure out what metal it's made of. But I don't think 25 poisha were 12 sided like this one. Maybe some weathering made part of the metal look white? Not sure to be honest, I'll try researching some stuff too

Waterboy...I'm not trying to discredit your post, I only presented some facts...As far as I know (And didn't check this) the mint did not do any copper plating at that time for any coins. I'm not sure how it would be possible for your penny to be plated as part of the mint process in 1983 even if it was struck on a foreign planchet. There are people here far more knowledgeable than me on the topic that I'm sure will chime in.

Thanks to CoinCanuck for pointing out the wrong date... For Paulz, I appreciate the heads up on the 12 sided rim comment... will have to research that issue. As for a XRF, where would that service be available from?

Very large bullion or coin dealers in the GTA, also a member here has access to one.

Hello CoinCanuck... no problem with your reply, I appreciate your comments as I'm trying to research this coin and I could use all the help I can get... I too question why the copper finish on a coin that is supposed to be 98% copper planchet. Copper plating wasn't used in 1983. I received no assistance whatsoever from the mint when I contacted them, so here I am, trying to research this coin.

Hello John100... thank you for chiming in with the GTA bullion/Coin Dealer service suggestion. You also mentioned that there might be a CCM that could have access to the XRF service, could you shoot me a contact name s.v.p. Thanks again...

It is in a PCGS Secure Holder. Try again in a little while - something is up with the PCGS website...

Thank you for your prompt reply and interesting comments SPP. If I may, I have a couple of questions. Is the rim on your 83 round or 12 sided? Also, what is the surface finish on your specimen? There are many anomalies present in my 83 which I do not understand and the questions defy explanation. First, how and why would this specimen appear to be copper plated? Second, at what point in the coins stamping process would the 12 sided rim be produced? Third, could you offer any explanation as to how this specimen could have evolved? I am asking these questions due to the fact that having contacted two Canadian Coin Grading Services, I was politely told that they would not want to handle this coin due to the excessive research time that would be required. Lastly SSP, what steps would you suggest that I undertake to have an XRF test completed on this coin, and would I ask for a test on both the plated metal as well as the planchet metal? Your indulgence and assistance is greatly appreciated... thank you.

Quote: Is the rim on your 83 round or 12 sided? It is 12-sided, but only slightly so. The planchet is a bit undersized relative to the Canadian small cent. Note that all the planchets are rimmed into Type 2 blanks as round planchets, the collar die creates the 12-sided edge during the strike. So in this case, the collar strike is weak. Quote: Also, what is the surface finish on your specimen It looks like a steel-coloured small cent, struck with fresh dies (I can see the die polish on the surfaces of the fields). Quote: I ask for a test on both the plated metal as well as the planchet metal? That is pretty much impossible with an XRF. The X-ray beam penetrates the coin, giving you the composition of the surface and near-surface. That said, it would be a very quick test to see if your coin was bronze versus a plated planchet. I have an XRF in my lab - I would happily test it for you, since you are reluctant to take our word on this coin. PM for me details. No cost to you, other than the return postage.

Hello SPP, in our last communication I was requested to PM you to arrange details to complete an XRF test on a 1983 one cent coin. My attempt to PM you was not allowed due to my status. I messaged staff requesting clearance to PM you and didn't receive that clearance. Could you please PM me to initiate those arrangements? Thank you SPP, waterboy41.
