Thanks all!
Amac--yes, I suspected "old cleaning" too.
Still, no complaints for $2

of-grampa--yes, on the front of the neck above the necklace there is a base of a 1 protruding, possibly punched there to test die hardness.

That's a good question!
This one has the highest profile, but there are a few others such as 1873, 1882, 1883, 1888 and countless other digits punched in the denticles of the die--the most common place they tested.

Btw, glad you liked that crop of the coin for your avatar!

Hi, would this be considered a "1 in neck". It isn't as defined as yours in the picture, but there appears to be something at the neck on this one.

Hi, I just noticed your post. I see something in the neck, but I think it's different than this variety, since the 1 is always in the same place. If you can show an enlarged photo of that area on the neck, I may be able to give an opinion.

Kurt, did you mean the one that of-grandpa has? I sure like that one. Brings back memoiries of where I spent many years, and lived the life of a happy man, poor, yes, but HAPPY! None of the BS we have to put up with here in the US! Bravo! Que bonito!

Dick, I haven't seen of-granpa's coin, but I would like to!

Well...I hear a lot of the same BuSiness is true for Canada and many places in Europe. Too much credit liquidity--and a culture of spending. Take that credit away, and we'll see what happens...

Thanks! Something is definitely there, although in that grade I would figure the S-1 mpd would be more prominent.
The position also seems a bit high for the S-1, so it may just be a die gouge? I'd like to see a more detailed photo to say more.
