Welcome to CCF. Great find by the way. It's always great to start out with a real error coin and not a bogus one. Great job! This is a Major Die Break (Also known as a Cud). The die broke do to being in a VLDS (Very Late Die State). This is what caused the error. I'll be looking forward to your new post. :) Errers and Varietys.

I've been out of the hobby for several years and just started back this year. My memory isn't what it used to be but I talked to someone years ago about my Cud coins and sent them pictures. It seems they're listed there and attributed to me. They were: CU-1c-1974-03 CU-1c-1975D-02 It's kinda neat to see them there. I wonder if anyone else ever found ones similar? |

These type of finds are rare and you may not even find one again in a long time. I only found two. A Cud on a 2005 West Virginia Quarter and one rim Die Break on a 2002 Louisiana State Quarter. Errers and Varietys.

Here are some close ups of the nickel. Sorry it may be a bit blurry since my camera phone has low megapixels.   The funny thing is that I found this in a CoinStar return bin near where I live. People have had the tendency to not get the coins from the return and found this, along with several silver coins both US and Canada, some other foreign coins and other US coins I am checking to see if there are any errors that I did not see. |

Wow, amazing that they didn't even notice this error at all. Whoever left this there just lost some money. Too bad about the other person, but great for you! If the other person knew anything about error coins, he would have kept it and had some brains before putting it in his CoinStar pile.

Thing is I know this isn't worth that much. From what I read, Cuds like this go for $10 to $20. Another thing there are only two coin specialty stores in my area (I live in upstate New York.) And I am uncertain about the places giving me a fair price without trying to scam me saying the coin isn't worth anything. |

I'd say it's worth 10 bucks. This is a keeper. I don't think you should sell it because this is your first error coin and it might mean a lot to you. But you can go ahead and make your own decision. I say keep it, but do whatever you want with it. Put it in a 2X2 flip case if you have them.

Not trying to be picky or anything, but that isn't a "rim Cud". It a full blown Cud. A rim Cud is a die break restricted to the rim gutter on the die. A Cud happens when a piece of the die face, that joins the rim gutter, breaks off. Again, not trying to be too picky. Just correcting the terminology. Excellent find TrustBengals! And yes, it is a Cud and not just a rim Cud. CudsonCoins is a great site. If you'd like to sell, I'd suggest ebay and not a local coin shop (LCS). to CCF This is a great find  Congratulations. They are not easy to find - I have been in the coin hobby for almost 2 years now and even though I have found about 10 rim Cuds I have only ever found 1 actual Cud. You got really lucky finding one so soon on in your new hobby. |
