Exceptional find, in the wild yet! Kudos! Mid-late stage die cap strikes where the cap is thinning to allow design thru!

Awesome find! But I'm having heart palpitations looking at the second and third pictures can you please hold the coin by the edges? The way you are holding it can leave ugly fingerprints that won't go away. Thank you very much!

Yep, Coop stands correct. It is a Capped Die.

Struck THROUGH a capped die, not to be confused with a die cap which is a totally different thing.

That's what I meant Conder101. I am no expert by any means, just learned a lot of it myself from accurate resources. Sorry about that. I should of said Struck Through a Capped Die. I already know the difference.

I saw this on the CRH topic and just now followed up on it. As suspected, struck through a capped die!

Congratulations!

That is an awesome and seldom found error in the wild. As suggested, always hold coins by the edges only. On copper especially, fingerprints may be invisible to begin, but will get darker and darker over time until they are ugly and black. When they are left for too long, they are impossible to remove without damaging the coin.

That find is easily worth $20 or more.

I'm not an error expert either, but my eyes and brain told me mint error - I just didn't know which kind. Glad you were able get the answer after I spied it in the Cents thread.

It dawned on me tonight that the reason the light went off in my head is I pulled a similar looking coin a few months ago when I was away from here...

John77, that looks like a Grease Filled Die error (AKA Struck Through Grease). Great find John77! Thank you for sharing this and Merry Christmas! :)

Edited to correct my misspelling of John77's name.

That would be John77.

In any case, I also think your coin, John77, is a heavy Greaser. However, it is extreme enough to garner a nice premium over one cent.

I must say that is an awesome find in the wild. I've found a couple of clipped LWC's but nothing as cool as that!

Thanks for the clarification on my error, Errers and Varietys and spruett001. I'm definitely no error expert, but I always pull the "weird" looking coins. Merry Christmas to you as well!

You're very welcome John77! Sorry about misspelling your name. At least I corrected it. I am also no coin expert by any means, just have a lot of knowledge from researching errors from accurate sources on the internet.

No worries... it's just an id. You got the name right, that's the main thing. It's nice when we all can pool our knowledge to benefit all.
