I am not familiar at all with copper... I did not want to waste my time researching this if it is an obvious fake... But as it goes with my other coins.... it appears I will be drug into a new area there just seems to be little available quick access info on these as compared to say Morgan or Peace dollars.... The books on cent varieties are high dollar investments.... I'll see about getting some full Obv. and Rev. images up...

thanks

We appreciate the close ups, but full obverse and reverse would be necessary to determine authenticity.

Both full obverse and reverse pictures are needed to check if it's legit or not.

From your close up photo, however, I see nothing wrong. But we still need those obv. and rev. pics.

Edit: After looking at full photos, I don't believe this is authentic...something is "off" about it.

The base of the 4 is also very wrong. This date style/ position does not match any Newcomb numbers on the PCGS coinfacts listings. http://www.PCGScoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/535644 Click on the drop down box to show all varieties.

I just remembered.. I have a jewelers scale... should I weigh it or do fakes generally meet the weight requirements?

Actually, research isn't a waste of time. Learning about the fakes will help you spot the real thing.

Doing so CAN sometimes be profitable. A modern fake is worthless, but a contemporary counterfeit can go for thousands. This one sold for over $7,000
