Yes, really. Quite a coincidence that it should come so soon after this discussion (while I still remembered it). The auction coin looks similar both in colour and wear. So far, with almost four weeks left, the highest bid is $35.

Litotes- That is great! Is the coin being described in the auction as being a real variety struck in tin or as some sort of contemporary counterfeit?

Well, a direct translation of the text from Norwegian reads something like "POSSIBLE FORGERY, 2 marck 1655, appears to be made of tin. Weight 10,32 grams". In other words, they do not know much more than you do - they have a coin which does not feel like other silver coins.
The seller is a Norwegian auction house which specializes in stamps but also take what they can get of other collectibles.
The bid is now raised to $40, by the way.

One thing is for sure, this is interesting for someone. The bidding has reached $100, still with plenty of time to go. It seems like $15 is a steal even for a forgery....

The bidding stands now at approximately $ 110 (+20% commission). We will get the final result on Friday. Nothing new has been said about the coin.

Someone decided to liven things up, the bidding now stands at $200 (+20%). We are now pretty close to what you can get for an unquestionably real one. Things often happen the last day.

And now the final result is in. It was sold for NOK 1800 (+20%) which roughly equates with $ 350 (+20%). Either the buyer thought is was real, or else he thought it was as least as valuable as one. I have in fact seen real ones of similar grade sell for less than this recently. Quite amazing. I know that certain forgeries sell for more than their real counterparts but I did not expect that to happen here. Definitely interesting.
One could even speculate that the prize was held down because someone feared it was real....not that I am suggesting this, but who knows?

Litotes- wow...That is amazing. $350 (+20%) is way more than I expected. Well, I may still not know if it is real or not, but at least I know that it is valuable. And if nothing else, this just means that the coin is one of the most interesting in my collection. Thank you so much for all of your help!
-If anybody ever gets any more info on these "tin" Norwegian 2 Marck coins, I would very interested since these probably have a fascinating story behind them.

I just had an odd thought relating to how this coin may have been created. Is it possible that the real hammer dies were stolen from the mint and were used by counterfeiters that used tin blanks? Are there any notable instances in history in which something like this might have happened?
