I think the CSS file may have been corrupted somehow, I just reuploaded it and it seems ok now.

What's even more strange is that I went back to a post that I know fo a fact was formated in this manner but when it opened it was normal  perhaps it is caused by the page not fully opening or opening with errors  |

Nutshell - each page has (at least) 2 parts - the page data and the formatting instructions (CSS or Cascading Style Sheets).
If the css file was corrupted, your browser got, um, interesting instructions on how to format that data. If you refresh the page or loaded a new one after Bobby uploaded the clean version, you got the new instructions and your browser followed them.
