Not in a bad way, but in the sense that most collectors aren't aware of the possibility for such toning and, therefore, are not likely to be searching for one - makes for a difficult selling environment. You could always direct a prospective buyer to the discussions of the coin here on CCF if they question its validity. I don't think paying for TPG certification/encapsulation is going to result in much (if any) financial gain. Just my thoughts...

I'm just thinking that PCGS certification could give it some credence if they were to certify something else than "plating".
But on the other hand I'm wondering what they would grade - maybe a 91 (no grade, questionable color) which would be a very bad thing.
I guess we need to wait and see more samples out there. The toning is so drastic and uniform - on both sides. It's baffling.

PCGS would probably grade it genuine which just destroy a coin"s value, just chuck it on ebay with a link to this thread, seems like your storage environment is perfect to create this toning |

I submitted this picture to my Mint Rep to get the mint's response to the apparent Alchemist ability of my sealed closet. My coins were all sealed in zip lock bags on a shelf in a cupboard that was rarely opened for 10 or 12 years. In the dark. I laid them out for a random picture. All coins are 'Fine' silver.  Here is the reply from my rep: Quote:"'The effect of ageing is a natural occurrence that is inherent in the coining business in that over time effects such as tarnish, toning or discolouration will appear. These effects are inevitable but normally slow due to process enhancements that we have developed at the Royal Canadian Mint''. Now, over time we have worked with and changed lacquer supplier as some of the older finished coins were not as UV resistant. Keep in mind this can still affect coins stored in the dark away from oxygen and lighting that could speed up the process. We have attempted to rework some coins in the past for customers, however, the outcome in most cases was not a successful one because the process of stripping, polishing and re-lacquering runs the chance of destroying the coin which cannot be replaced for the customer. |

Interesting that the mint reworked some coins. I did not know they did this, so interesting information.

I saw this coin on ebay and immediately hit the buy now button thinking this was perhaps another occurrence of my golden coin in the same series. These are the images taken from the ebay listing:   I did not fault the seller, but the image did look more golden on the listing. My bad for not asking for more pictures. Here are both coins side by side...  Mine is convincingly golden. To this day I still do not understand what happened to my coin.  Here is a scan:  Edited by canadian_coins

Note the thick "cap" applied to the surface of the reverse side (and only the reverse side) as part of its packaging for Petro Canada. It is this material that is causing the golden colour you are seeing - it's the cap more than the coin that is changing colour.

Quick update: Perhaps it's only my imagination but my coin keeps getting "darker" or, I should say, more red copper-like colored.  Unsolved mystery. |

Hard to say from comparison images as unless they are guaranteed to have been created under the exact same conditions, colour differences could be lighting-dependent. I showed the coin to my wife and kids for second opinions... and they all agree that it is closer to copper now, rather than gold. All subjective opinions. But it kind of makes sense that if this is a gradual and on-going toning effect then it could continue to accentuate over time. Then... what the heck is going on? It has to be the capsule.
