I'd only be concerned if you were carving coins minted in beryllium. (really obscure joke ) I'll just guess that cupronickel particles are too dense to be suspended in the air to breathe. If you were actually vaporizing metals into smaller particles that would be more of an issue--and hard to easily filter out.

FFFPPPSSSSSSSHHHRRRROOOOOOOOOOO000MMMMMM! Eaglefoot ducks as massive rush of air flies over his head. And so he runs out of the room quick as a rabbit, realizing that his lack of knowledge with simple chemical formulas might be embarrasingly apparant.....though he does deduce that "Ba" and "Be" would mean Barium & Beryllium and thinks that he gets this joke and does find it funny, though he's never even heard of either chem. compd. before in his life........

You have more than likely run into these two elements at some point in your life. Those wonderfully nasty shakes that they make you drink before a GI(gastrointestinal, not Government Issue ) Xray are barium sulfate and beryllium is a key component of beryl, aka emerald, aquamarine, etc. BTW, beryllium is a Category 1 carcinogen, right up there with benzene and dioxin, incredibly toxic by inhalation of dust

I carve nickels, and unless you're making some kind of dust, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Mostly, I make very small flecks, and never breathe any of them. Here are a couple of pics- Image: 7.jpg71.04 KB Image: 6.jpg45.95 KB

Thanks, they are a lot of fun. I've only done 15 so far, but I'm getting better at it all the time. I've never started with a "clean slate", but I may try that someday. For now I'm just learning to use what is there already. What do you guys use to carve with?

Quote: What do you guys use to carve with? I have zero talent in this field and being clumsy with sharp tools does not help (I have some scars to prove it!) If I ever decided to make one, it would probably involve the use of a CNC machine!

I have one "Hobo Nickel" for every finger I'm missin'....!.....and then I stopped carving for obvious reasons !...... Kidding !.. Though I might feel artistic from time to time.....this isn't something I've ever attempted......the "practicing would get costly for me"/////

Quote: I have zero talent in this field I said the same thing about 6 months ago. I can't draw, paint, sculpt, or do anything else artistic, but with just a little help, I learned to carve nickels- and it's not as hard as it might seem. It's a bit slow at first, but it's a lot of fun. After you get the hang of it, it goes faster. If you'd like to learn more about carving, shoot me an email and I'll be happy to help. Tom
