Yea people hate them bc they are so close to the quarter. They should be withdrawn because they were a bad design with the size and color so close to the quarter. The "gold" dollars are atleast easy to spot the difference.

Springcypress, where did you acquire that Barber Half? I've been thinking about starting up a Barber set myself. Plus, I think you pretty much live right down the road from me and there aren't any shops (at least that I know of) in the northwest side of Houston!

I haven't gone to that one yet. There's one in Traders Village that I checked out a few weeks back but they seemed to be a bit on the high side.

yep... I thought the same thing about the one in traders village... Prices were way off, it was like they took the Red Book overgraded everything by one step and priced everything in their store off of that. The store on rice is "different"... I think it's called Collectors Coin Shop. the owner is an old vietnam vet who's more concerned about playing his guitar, preparing for the open mic night, and smoking out than he is about turning a profit. He's a riot to talk to. If you're not scared of dropping a few f bombs here and there he'll love ya.

That's awesome! I'll have to check this place out. From our area of town it's only about a 30 minute drive on the weekend. If I went there now it might be a different story...I probably wouldn't arrive until sometime tonight, with the traffic and all.

it's open 7 days a week... the owner is the guy with the short beard... his buddy with the crazy long beard helps him out alot... both are vets.
Sometimes when he's in a serious jam session it's hard to get his attention to open the door...
DON'T STEAL ALL THE BARBERS THOUGH!

Ha ha! Ok, I will leave the Barbers for you. Right now I am primarily into IHCs and Liberty V nickels, unless I can also find bargains in Morgans and Walkers.

Guys, I thought I'd toss my Two Cents worth in here. I started collecting Barber coinage approximately three and a half years ago, and nothing in all three sets (halves, quarters, and dimes) will grade above XF, with the majority of them ranging between AG-3 and F-12. It's been a hoot putting them together (and a challenge). I'm more into having the coin than worrying about the grade. With that in mind, I've been able to get quite a few of the coins for my sets - halves: still need the 1892-O - quarters: still need the '96-S, '97-S, '01-S, and '13-S - dimes: I still need 10 of them (the more expensive ones). I tell you this in order to let you know that, for the most part, the Barber Series can be put together on a budget. Ralph

I know I had a blast putting the dimes together. My dime set sounds a lot like yours (AG-F). Other than the 95-O I didn't spend more than $100 on any of the keys. I pulled most of the coins in my set from the junk silver bins. It took me close to 7 years to complete it, but it was always fun. (The 01S and 03S were the hardest to find)

springcypress - I hear ya on the fun. I enjoy all of them no matter the series or type. This coin collecting hobby is a hoot. I don't think I'll be out of line by referring you to a yahoo group I belong to (if I am I've no doubt one of the moderators will correct my mistake) - it's called coincollectingfun - easy to join, and easy to unjoin if you choose to - only got 6 members, and I'm probably the most active in that I've posted all my sets that I have in albums there (scans are too big to post album pages here). If you'd like to view my collection, check it out. You'll see that the majority of my coins are well circulated, but I think they look kinda spiffy. Most of my modern day circulating coins have been taken from pocket change (mine and anyone else's who'll let me check it out) and bank rolls. All in all, I don't think I've done too shabby over the past three and a half years - hope the next three and a half are just as good.
