I used to save them compulsively in a giant jar in the garage. Saved up about $110 face value, couldn't find a buyer, and dumped it in a coinstar when I needed something from Amazon. That 80+ pound eyesore is now out of my garage, and I haven't come to regret my decision yet. In truth, had I just invested that $110 when I started the hoard (2008, during the economic crisis), I probably would have made a lot more than even the copper melt would have gotten me. Now, I still have an excessive amount of cents for my kids to go through when I kick the bucket, but at least they are all AU-MS now!

I have been setting aside copper cents for the last couple years. I don't know why, now. There is really no reason to do it. I got them from change, mostly, and a few rolls. I have never searched a box of cents. I might have $5 worth to cash in at this point, so I'm not too concerned with that, either.

If you know anyone who collects elongated coins, they might be happy to take copper cents off your hands, as the copper ones work better in the penny rolling machines!

I did for awhile a long time ago and then just turned them in. There is no copper shortage and you can not legally melt them so why keep them? I have noticed in my area I see fewer and fewer LMC. John1

I used to save them until I had about 30 boxes taking up valuable space in my small apartment. I unloaded all but about 10. Now I only keep AU and MS coins. I also save red copper LMC's with issues for my daughters friend that gets the elongated coins when she goes on vacation.

If the effort to hoard the copper cents would be worth all the pain, time involved and inconveniences, the Feds would have done it a long time ago and don't forget all those trips to and from the banks.....TOTALLY NOT WORTH IT.

I agree with Insideout. I've rolled enough copper to buy other things I wanted. Might sound stupid but it seems more justified or at least a way to put aside some cash I might not have done otherwise.
BTW. How do you quote someones post to your own? I can't seem to figure that out.

I save some coppers but only the bright red ones. I figure if copper never goes up in value enough for them to be worth more than face value, then maybe they'll have a little extra value some day just for their high grade. I know they'll never be worth a lot given the high mintages off all modern cents, but at some point even very common date coins will become relatively rare in high grade. It won't happen during my lifetime but it would be nice to pass these on to kids and grandkids.
