Here's a German coin from Mecklemburg-Schwerin (1904) featuring Alexandra who was a "Grossherzogin" (Grand Duchess) of this German state.

World coins offer a lot of choices. Can't forget all the lovely images of Brittania, Liberty and her sisters on coins from Great Britain, France and colonies, and the US. These are some of my favourites. :) This coin is a silver 25 Gourdes Commem from Haiti, and is one of my favourite coins. This 1933 Guinea 5 centavo coin is also really lovely; the design is also on coins from Portugual, Cape Verde, Argentina, etc. for this time period. San Marino 1973 500 Lira, silver. Romania, 1912 2 Lei Iceland, 1974 500 Kronur Greece, 1960 20 Drachmas silver. Australia's 2007 Year of the Surf Lifesaver 20 cent

If we were to include the allegorical (or whatever the word) images of Liberty etc., I'd have to add some coins to my Polish list. That would include ~ -> 1 and 2 zl (series 1924-25) called "Girl with ears of corn", -> 2, 5, and 10 zl (series 1932-34) called "Woman's head" . There also was a pattern for a 1 zl like this. -> 5 zl Nike (series 1928-32), -> "50" pre-war pattern coin with a girl.

Voilà, women (real or allegorical) from current euro coins. Circulation pieces only - adding collector coins would have made the list pretty long. 1/2/5 ct FR (Marianne) 2 ct SM (Statue of Liberty) 10 ct IT (Botticelli's Venus) 10/20/50 ct FR (Semeuse - Sower) €2 GR (Europa on the bull/Zeus) €2 AT (Bertha von Suttner) Christian

The oldest identifiable, named, human woman (as opposed to a goddess or personification) I have in my collection is this silver denarius of Empress Faustina I, wife of emperor Antoninus Pius and niece of emperor Hadrian. She died in 141 AD, and this coin was struck sometime around 147 AD in memory of her. The reverse shows Aeternitas (Eternity), a personification or minor goddess, so this is an all-female coin.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Ah, Roty's original version of the sower! The modern, and somewhat abstract, version of the Semeuse is on the current coins (see first page). This newer one I do not find better than the old one - in September, however, there will be some new pieces. No circulation coins, just regional collector pieces, but quite attractive: Christian
