Other than the 2 tiny hits, the reverse is drop dead gorgeous . It seems like a little wear on obverse cleaned ? yes it was ,But I have a feeling your right about the retoneing . Color? kind of a pastel color . I kind of know where your at with this coin and if it weren't for being a S-VDB , this coin would not be worth talking about .

Maybe my eyes are just too old, but I see no signs of cleaning caught by these photos. Even if it graded but with details, that wouldn't deter me a bit. So, I guess I am just saying I want the coin and grading would not deter or encourage my interest in this beautiful coin. I would gladly pop mine out of my album and pop yours in!

It's an AU coin judging by the wear on Lincoln's lapel, beard, cheek bone, ear. So most likely cleaned as well.

Agree. Slightly worn, cleaned and now re-toning.

I'm in a different camp. I don't think the coin was cleaned or if it was there is no signs of it or very lightly. I do think its AT and what we are seeing is that the AT across the head and jacket have been rubbed off either by handling or something else
I think the coin is MS possible 63 or even 64 as the reverse shows absolutely no signs of circulation. its very rare to see a coin that shows circulation on one side and not the other. imo it would see a details designation for surface/color alteration
looks like obverse die#4

It looks like an AU+ coin that has a lot of makeup (recoloring) on. There's always a chance you could land a UNC Details grade too though.
There are several spots around Lincoln's head where the makeup is falling off.

Can you get a close-up of the MM? Looks to have been whizzed but still attractive. The wheats are far too strong for an AU coin.

Thanks everyone for the comments, they have been really helpful. I can get a photo of the mint mark later tonight for BadThad, but up front I can say that the little mark between the S and the 9 appears to be a minor string struck through.
So, what exactly is whizzing? Heard of it, probably seen a number of coins that have had it done, but never really understood what is being done exactly to the coin.

Sometimes, the whizzing is done with some skill in a radial way, to simulate a sort of radial mint luster. Can also depend on the coarseness (or fineness) of the whizzing brush.
I agree that the '09 S VDB should be slabbed, but it must be understood that it will come back with a 'details', or perhaps not be graded at all, because it has been whizzed.

As requested here is a shot of the date area. It shows that little struck through as well. And since I had the coin out of the holder, I took an angled light shot to really show off the cleaning marks. Completely invisible until you turn the light just right under magnification, and then they are obvious.

nice closeups. it really looks like a whizzed coin which is shame. I also think after it was whizzed they attempted to cover it up by recoloring. double whammy. UNC details.
