State Quarter Silver Proof Set

as was already said these werent available in any other way except in the whole proof set so the only way to get them is by buying the whole set or finding someone that is willing to part out the set, but remember the 99 silver State Quarters in the set is what makes the set so expensive so unless the person has cracked the other coins out of the proof set I doubt they would be willing to part the set out like that because the other coins they would have left would be pretty much worthless. You are pretty much paying for the State Quarters and getting the other coins free in the 99 proof set

I agree with everyone and I might also take the route Brucec was talking about: Buy the entire silver set sets from '99 to '07, if you can get them for are $700 and sell what you don't want or need to recoup some costs.

I wonder if they prices will drop once the State Quarter program ends and is out of the spot light.

i really think the reason 99 are so much is b/c coin collecting was kinda at a stop before state hood quarters. And in 99 no one bought the silver proofs but dealers and a few collectors. Now everyone wants to finish the set and are lacking that set. so price is driven up. I dont think this years set will be worth much. but dont not buy a lot b/c thats what I think. I will get my usual 1 silver set.

with that and think it's likely to go down.......but 50 years from now.....dunno.

With new Moderns......I think it's hard for people, but they need to think "long term" and not the here and now or 5 years from now. It's a rare thing to have a newly designed/minted ciculating coin be worth huge premiums from the get go. Whether individually or in sets or taken in pocket change. What Classic coins were HUGE VALUABLE COLLECTOR HITS WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT ? OR EVEN 30-50 YEARS LATER ? The answer (short of varieties and errors) is SLIM to NONE !!
Now it could be true that the best value for these qtrs (1st year or any year) may very well be right now........BUT....the best "test" is 50-100 years from now.

Well the price of the 99 Silver set has come down in the past year. Last year it was hovering around $475-$500. Today you can pick one up for $250-$350.

I wish the US mint would put a small serial number on the case. It would help to determine how many sets have been cracked open. Of course this would mean that the TPG's and the shop at home channels would need to list any serial numbers that they cracked open.

If they did this for every year, we as collectors could get a clearer number of intact sets. I think if this was to happen, the prices of proof sets would slowly start to rise as higher number of sets get cracked open.
