AU55-58, not cleaned, and I love the double profile!

AU-58 straight, just mishandled over the years.

My first pictures may have been misleading ... I darkened up the photos to get rid of the glare and show the detail a little better. Here is the actual look. Personally I think it has been cleaned. I just posted one side of the original coin color.

You've got a 163 year old gold piece. There is a high likelihood it has been cleaned because cleaning coins was a common, normal, acceptable practice right up to the middle of the 20th century.

The question is whether or not it was harshly or improperly cleaned. I don't see a harshly cleaned coin in the images. Improperly cleaned is a judgement call and very subjective.

Your second image has a lot of light on the coin but my guess is it would have a 50/50 chance of straight grading as market acceptable.

Good luck!

If genuine, it might slab at MS-61.

Finally got it back from TPG (NGC) - it took over 3 weeks.
I was quite pleasantly surprised that they gave it a straight grade MS62.
Thanks all for your input.

Very nice! I had my doubts originally because the first pics showed a lack of luster. The slab pictures show a beauty of a coin!

John, congratulations! The NGC pics really make the old gal pop to life! I love all $3 gold but they are really nice to behold in MS.

Very nice result, congratulations. The slabbed photo, with less light on the coin, make it look so much better.

Agree, the slabbed pictures make it look much less washed out

Still not happy with the slight flatness of hair detail near Lib's ear.
Good strike elsewhere, but for MS62, and no wear, this area must have had the design detail less than perfectly struck.

I agree that the slabbed pictures have less of a washed out appearance.
